Smaller American Lawns Today is a movement introduced in June of 1997 by Dr. William A. Niering, Professor of Botany at Connecticut College. Though not a new concept the movement gained national recognition after its introduction. It is aimed at reversing the lawn mania in America by restoring home and industrial grounds to more harmonious, productive, ecologically sound, naturalistic landscapes.
