Connecticut College Junior Swimmer Inked as Third Team Selection

New London, Conn. --CConnecticut College junior swimmer Kate Kovenock of Orono, Maine has been named a COSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) Academic-All America on the at-large team of the college division. A third-team selection, Kovenock captured a national championship in the 50-yard freestyle this March at the NCAA Division III Championship in St. Peters, Missouri.

Kovenock won the 50-yard freestyle at the NCAA Championship with a time of 23.32 seconds, edging two-time national champion Beth Galloway of Kenyon College by just .01 seconds. Kovenock qualified for the event with a conference record setting time of 23.57 seconds at the NESCAC (New England Small College Athletic Conference) Championship February 20 in Middletown. As the only three-event winner at the conference championship, Kovenock was honored as the NESCAC Swimmer of the Meet.

A junior philosophy major, Kovenock is a two-time selection to the NESCAC All-Academic Team. The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) selects Academic All-America® teams in 12 programs: football, women’s volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s track & field/cross country, women’s track & field/cross country, men’s at-large and women’s at-large. A first team, second team and third team are selected in both the University (Division I and I-AA) and College (Division II, III and NAIA) Divisions.

NCAA Championship Update

New London, Conn. --Connecticut College junior All-American Kate Kovenock of Orono, Maine followed up her national championship peformance in the 50 yard freestyle with a fourth place finishing in the 200 yard freestyle Friday night. Kovenock posted a time of 1:52.81 to earn All-America Accolades for the second consecutive day. Freshman Ali Wilson of Honolulu, Hawaii competed in the 1,650 yard freestyle Saturday. Wilson finished 14th in the event, posting a time of 17:36.58. Kovenock will swim in the 100 yard freestyle later tonight.

3/1 Eight School Records Fall at NESCAC Men's Championship-Camel Men Finish Season Strong

New London, Conn. --The Connecticut College men’s swimming team set eight school records at the New England Small College Athletic Conference Championship hosted by Bowdoin College this weekend. The Camels finished 11th with a total of 407 points. Williams College won the championship meet with 1732 points.

Freshman Sam Garner and sophomore captain Andrew Dutton set four of the eight school records for the Camels. Garner posted a record-setting time of 10:03.72 in the 1000 yard freestyle. In the 1,650 yard freestyle, Garner established another record with a time of 16:57.33 for a 10th place finish. In the 500 yard freestyle, Dutton earned a 15th place finish with a time of 4:48.74. In the 400 yard individual medley, Dutton was 19th with a time of 4:22.96. Sophomore Zachary Landry set a school record for the Camels with his 10th place finish in the 50 yard butterfly, posting a time of 24.04 seconds.

The Camels excelled in the relay events. In the 200 yard medley relay, the foursome of Alex Hoyt, Bob Kyne, Zach Landry and Nate Borgelt set a school record with a time of 1:38.54. The Camels added record setting performances in two other relays. In the 400 yard medley relay, Alex Hoyt, Bob Kyne, Andrew Dutton, and Adam Phillips teamed up for a time of 3:39.40. In the 400 yard freestyle relay. Zach Landry, Adam Phillips, Andrew Dutton and Alex Hoyt finished with a time of 3:15.42.

The Camels enjoyed some other strong individual performances. Freshman Bob Kyne was seventh in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:11.21) and 14th in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:00.83). Sophomore Andrew Dutton finished 12th in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:09.90. Alex Hoyt finished 14th in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of :55.76.

The Camels concluded the season setting eight records at the Championship meet and 10 records in all.

2/27 Six Camels Earn All-Conference Honors at NESCAC Championship

New London, Conn. --The New England Small College Athletic Conference announced its 2004 All-Conference women’s swimming and diving team. The top three finishers in each event at the Conference Championship receive All-Conference Recognition. Connecticut College junior All-America Kate Kovenock (Orono, ME) was named Swimmer of the Meet after setting three NESCAC meet records.

Kovenock was named to the All-Conference Team for her first place finishes in the 50, 100 and 200 yard freestyle. In relay events Kovenock shared All-Conference honors in the 200 and 800 yard freestyle relay. The youthful Camels placed five freshmen on the All-Conference squad.

Ali Wilson (Honolulu, HI) earned All-Conference honors in four events at her first conference championship. Wilson was honored for her performance in the 500, 1000 and 1650 yard freestyle and was part of the 800 yard free relay team that garnered All-Conference recognition. Puni Almony (Kaneohe, HI) was honored for her performance on the 800 yard free relay. Kata Franczyk (W. Springfield, MA) was a member of the 200 yard free relay team.

Liz Lingo (Rehoboth Beach, DE), a key member of the Camel field hockey team in the fall, earned honors in the 200 and 800 yard free relay. Rysia Murphy (Richfield, MN) was another pivotal performer on the 200 yard freestyle relay team. Under the direction of second year head coach Marc Benvenuti, the Connecticut College women’s swimming team enjoyed its finest team finish in program history with a seventh place performance at the NESCAC women’s swimming and diving championship, scoring 724 points. The Camels set nine program records at the meet.

Kate Kovenock Wins NESCAC Swimmer of the Meet With Three Victories

New London, Conn. --The Connecticut College women’s swimming team enjoyed its finest team finish in program history with a seventh place finish at the NESCAC women’s swimming and diving championship hosted by Wesleyan University this weekend. The Camels finished with 724 points. Junior All-American Kate Kovenock was named the NESCAC Swimmer of the Meet following her dominating performance. In all, nine new team records were set for the Camels.

Kovenock was the only three-event winner at the meet, scoring the trifecta with victories in the 50, 100 and 200 yard freestyle. The time in the 200 of 1:52.60 topped a record she had previously set in 2003. All three finishes qualified her for the upcoming NCAA Championship in St. Louis.

Ali Wilson scored the most points of any freshmen in the NESCAC, setting three school records. Wilson won the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:06.26 and was second in the 1000 (10:40.19), and 1650 freestyle (17.46.62). Wilson was a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Championship in both the 500 and 1650 freestyle events.

The Camels enjoyed tremendous success, setting five school records in the relay events. Four relay teams were provisional qualifiers for the NCAA Championship. In the 200 yard freestyle relay, the foursome of Kata Franczyk, Rysia Murphy, Liz Lingo, and Kate Kovenock teamed up for a third place with a time of 1:37.96. In the 400 yard freestyle relay, Ali Wilson, Lingo, Franczyk, and Kovenock posted a time of 3:33.1 for a fourth place finish. In the 800 yard freestyle relay, Wilson, Lingo, Puni Almony, and Kovenock finished third with a time of 7:52.49. In the 200 yard medley relay, Franczyk, Kate Derr, Lingo, and Kovenock recorded a time of 1:51.32 for an eighth place finish.

Freshman Puni Almony was spectacular in her first championship meet, finishing 13th in the 500 yard freestyle (5:18.94), seventh in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:49.83), and ninth in the 1650 yard free with a time of 18:17.01. Liz Lingo was 18th in the 200 yard butterfly (2:17.23), and 19th in the 200 yard freestyle (1:59.89). Sophomore Kate Derr posted a seventh place finish in the 50 yard breaststroke (32.20) and was 10th in the 100 yard breast (1:09.73), and 15th in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:34.68. Kata Franczyk recorded a 12th place finish in the 50 yard freestyle (24.95), and was ninth in the 50 yard backstroke (28.63), and 17th in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 54.23.

2/9 Camel Women Finish Regular Season Undefeated

New London, Conn. --The Connecticut College swim teams closed out the regular season portion of their schedule successfully this weekend. The Women completed their first ever-undefeated dual-meet season by knocking off NESCAC rival Bates College 159-141, Wheaton 190-97, and Wellesley 172-122. Meanwhile, the Camel Men narrowly lost both meets falling to Bates 122-170 and Wheaton 131-157.

At Bates Friday night, the Camel Women won 10 of 16 events, capturing both the 400 Medley and 400 Freestyle Relay. Junior co-Captain Kate Kovenock led the way for the Camels, setting 2 pool records in the 100 yard Freestyle (52.21) and the 50 yard butterfly (26.94 Team Record). Kovenock also joined Rysia Murphy, Kata Franczyk and Liz Lingo as a member of the 400 yard freestyle relay team that set a pool record with a time of 3:39.41.

Sophomore Molly Goettsche was the clutch performer of the meet, pulling off an upset in the 100 yard backstroke in a season best time of 1:03.72. Event winners for the Camel’s included Puni Almony in the 1000 yard Freestyle (11:03.82), Ali Wilson in the 200 and 500 yard freestyle (1:58.32, 5:19.17), Kate Derr in the 50 and 100 yard breaststroke (:32.36, 1:11.17) and Kate Kovenock in the 100 yard freestyle (:52.21) and the 50 yard butterfly (:26.94).

The Camel men won 7 of 16 events but did not have the depth to defeat Bates. Sam Garner continued his dominance of the distance events making a clean sweep of the 500 and 1000 yard freestyle with respective times of 5:01 and 10:24.68. Freshmen Bob Kyne swept the 50 and 100 breaststroke with times of: 29.21 and 1:03.48. Co-captains Andrew Dutton and Alex Hoyt each recorded victories, Dutton took the 400 yard individual medley (4:03.91) and Hoyt won the 50 yard backstroke with a time of: 26.68.

The Camel women concluded their dual-meet season defeating NEWMAC rivals Wellesley and Wheaton finishing the year undefeated with a dual-meet record of (17-0-1). The win was capped off by outstanding performances from everyone. The team took control of the meet immediately by winning the 400 medley relay. The foursome of Molly Goettsche, Kate Derr, Kate Kovenock and Kata Franczyk set a school record with a time of 4:07.68.

Multiple event winners included Ali Wilson (1000, 500, 200 butterfly), Kate Kovenock (200 freestyle, , 100 yard butterfly), and Ali McDonald (1-Meter, 3-Meter dives). The Camel women won 12 of 16 events. Other strong performances came from senior co-captain Lisa Bartels, and sophomore’s Lexie Zukowski and Brie Zandan. Freshmen Liz Lingo had a breakthrough day achieving a second place finish with a personal best finishing time of 2:02.58 in the 200 yard freestyle.

The Camel men were defeated by Wheaton College 157-131. Sophomore co-captain Andrew Dutton broke his own team record in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:04.93. Freshmen Adam Phillips enjoyed a memorable afternoon, achieving in-season personal bests in the 100, 200 and yard 500 freestyles (:50.83, 1:49.08 and 5:00.54). Other event wins came from Sam Garner in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:25.64), Alex Hoyt in the 100 yard butterfly (:55.89), Bob Kyne in the 100 and 200 yard breaststrokes (1:02.19, and 2:16.94), and Andrew Dutton in the 200 yard individual medley (2:04.41).

The Camel swimmers are off until the NESCAC championship. The women compete on February 19th-21st at Wesleyan and the men compete on February 26th-February 28th at Bowdoin College.

1/25 Big Day for Camels at Wesleyan

Camel Men and Women Take Two Wins

New London, Conn. --Marc Benvenuti and his Camel men and women’s swim teams return from the triple dual meet against Clark, Colby Sawyer and Wesleyan University with momentum as they head into the final month of the regular season. The men defeated Clark 159-61 and Colby Sawyer 173-30 but fell to a strong Wesleyan team 195-86. The women also swept Clark (222-77) and Colby Sawyer (208-85). The Camel women also won 12 of 16 events against Wesleyan but finished in a 150-150 tie.

Once again, the Camel’s continued to reset the record books. Freshman Sam Garner broke his first school record in the 1000-yard freestyle in a time of 10:15.90. Sophomore captain Andrew Dutton broke co-captain Alex Hoyt’s 100-yard butterfly record with a quick time of 55.33 and Ali Wilson reset her previous school record in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:13.61.

Five Camels achieved personal best times. Sam Nasuti finished 100 and 200-yard butterfly with respective times of :58.99 and 2:14.53. Freshman Liz Lingo posted a time of 2:23.22 in the 200-yard butterfly. Granger Abuhoff posted a time of 2:22.44 in the 200-yard butterfly, and Alex Hoyt finished with a time of 2:07.26 in the 200-yard backstroke. Junior co-Captain Kate Kovenock set a Wesleyan Pool Record with a smoking time of 23.61 in the 50-yard freestyle, asserting her All-America status as one of the best in the nation. Kovenock ranks in the top five nationally for the 50, 100, and 200-yard freestyle events.

1/25 Camel Women Win RPI Invitational

Troy, NY-The Camel women remain undefeated in dual meet competition and return with a victory over the seven team field at the RPI invite. The Camel’s improved upon last years 6-1 record by sweeping this year’s seven team invite.

Highlights of the meet included four NCAA qualifying times. Junior co-captain Kate Kovenock recorded 2 NCAA ‘A’ qualifying times in the 50 (23.87) and 100 (51.67) yard freestyles. Kovenock was joined by Ali Wilson, Liz Lingo, and Kata Franczyk in the 400 freestyle relay who teamed up to finish the meet with a smoking time of 3:38.16. The fantastic finish was good enough to set a new team record and qualify the foursome for the NCAA’s with a ‘B’ qualifying time.

Junior diver Alicia McDonald recorded her first NCAA qualifying score of 254.55 on the 1-meter board winning the event. She followed up with a second place finish in the 3-meter dive, narrowly missing the NCAA qualifying score with a second place finish in the event.

In addition to winning the team competition, the Camel’s won 8 out of 13 events. Multiple event winners included Kate Kovenock in the 50 and 100 freestyles, Puni Almony in the 500 and 1000 freestyles, and Ali Wilson in the 200 freestyle and 200 butterfly. All three swimmers recorded season best times in their events. Wilson’s time of 2:13.68 in the 200 butterfly broke the 14 year school record by nearly one second. Sophomore’s Kate Derr and Jessica Schwartz recorded personal best times in the 200 breaststroke and 200 IM respectively.

In just his second year at the helm, head coach Marc Benvenuti has the Camel swimming program headed in a positive direction. The Camel women continue to re-write the record books and have already broken seven team records this season.

1/15 Camel Women Improve to 5-0 in Split With Coast Guard

New London, Conn.--After sixteen days of training in sunny Naples, Florida, the Camel Men and Women returned to face the Coast Guard Academy. This year, the Camel women were looking for redemption from last year’s loss to the Bears. The meet was full of outstanding performances, which led to four new team records and one NCAA Provisional Qualifying time.

The women prevailed over the Bears by a score of 150-88, while the men fell to Coast Guard 130-98. There was a brief ceremony for Senior Captain Lisa Bartels who swam her last home meet of her career as a Camel. Bartels celebrated the occasion wih a first place finish in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:06.18. The women’s team won 12 of 13 events. On the men’s side, sophomore co-captain Andrew Dutton swam to victories in the 200 and 500 yard freestyle with respective time of 1:49.68 and 4:57.71. Both finishes marked season best times for the Camels. Co-captain Alex Hoyt broke Dutton’s team record in the 100 yard butterfly in a time of 55.40.

Freshman Ali Wilson continued her success in the distance event winning the 500 (5:14.54) and 1000 (10:40.85) yard freestyles. Wilson’s time of 5:14.54 in the 500 yard freestyle broke the oldest school record that was set in 1988, while her 1000 time broke her existing record. All-American Kate Kovenock swam a personal best time in the 100 yard butterfly, breaking a school record from 1993. Her finish was fast enough to qualify for NCAA’s with a provisional time of 59.28. In the breaststroke event, Sophomore Kate Derr swam a season’s best 1:09.81. The Camel women divers finished 1,2,3 on both board as Junior Ali McDonald won the 1 and 3-meter competition.

Other event winners for the Camel’s include Kata Franczyk (50 Free), Molly Goettsche (100 Back), Liz Lingo (100 Free), Sam Garner (1000 Free), Bob Kyne (100 Breast).

1/13 Camel Women Remain Undefeated With 134-108 Victory Over Grinnell

Naples, FL--The Connecticut College swimming teams were in action Saturday afternoon in Naples, Florida. The Camel women improved to 4-0 with a 134-108 victory while the men’s team dropped a 151-90 decision to Grinnell.


For the Camel women, Ali Wilson led the Camels to victory with a record setting performance. Wilson set a new school record in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 18:31.79. Wilson also earned victories in the 500-yd. Freestyle (5:25.44) and the 100-yd butterfly (1:03.29).

Junior All-American Kate Kovenock picked up wins in the 100 and 200 yard freestyle events with respective times of :52.08 and 1:53.94. Kovenock took the lead leg in the 200 yard freestyle relay, joining Rysia Murphy, Kata Franczyk, and Lisa Bartels for another Camel victory in a time of 1:43.98. Sophomore Molly Goettsche of Clinton won the 100 yard backstroke with a winning time of 1:05.08. Kate Derr notched a victory in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.81. The foursome of Molly Goettsche, Kate Derr, Liz Lingo and Rysia Murphy teamed up for a winning time of 1:58.53 in the 200 yard medley relay.

For the Camel men, Sam Garner earned wins in the 1650 yard freestyle (17:27.03) and the 500 yard freestyle (5:04.63). Freshman Adam Phillips was victorious in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.17. Bob Kyne of Waterford won the 100 yard breaststroke in a time of 1:03.22.
The Camels will return to competition in Lott Natatorium with a 6:00 p.m. meet against the Coast Guard Academy on Thursday evening.

Camel Women Improve to 3-0, Men Win Meet in Final Event

New London, Conn. --The Connecticut College men and women’s swimming teams recorded a sweep of Trinity College Sunday afternoon. The Camel men (2-1) won 12 of 16 events including the final relay to earn the 151-143 win. The women continued their strong start (3-0) with a 180-120 victory.

The Camel women enjoyed a big afternoon, winning 13 of 16 events. Junior All-American Kate Kovenock scored wins in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle and also in the 100-yard butterfly. Kate Derr notched victories in the 100, and 200-yard breaststroke. Freshman Ali Wilson continues to impress and was the winner of the 200 and 500-yard freestyle along with the 200-yard butterfly. Puni Almony won the 1000-yard freestyle. Ali McDonald had a solid afternoon on the boards, sweeping the 1 and 3-meter dives.

The Camels excelled in the relay events. In the 400-yard medley relay, Molly Goettsche, Kate Derr, Kate Kovenock and Rysia Murphy earned a win with a time of 4:12.25. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the freshmen foursome of Ali Wilson, Rysia Murphy, Liz Lingo, and Kata Fracnzyk teamed up for a victory.

In a close battle, the foursome of Zach Landry, Nate Borgelt, Adam Phillips, and Alex Hoyt secured the victory for the Camel men with their winning performance and time of 3:25.78 in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Andrew Dutton of Mystic set a school record in the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.88) and also earned wins in the 100-yard butterfly and 200 yard individual medley. Adam Phillips secured victories in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle events. Alex Hoyt registered wins in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke. Freshman Bob Kyne of Waterford posted wins in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke. Sam Garner was another winner for the Camels in the100 yard-freestyle.

11/24 Camel Women Sweep Tufts and UMass Dartmouth-Men Set Several Records in Split

The Camel men and women are coming off a strong performance against Tufts University and UMASS Dartmouth where they established five new school records and two NCAA qualifying times. The women return to Connecticut College (2-0) after defeating UMass Dartmouth 160-120. The women also pulled off an upset against the Tufts women with a score of 156-142. The men return (1-1) after falling to Tufts 208-81 and beating UMass Dartmouth 154-110.

Junior co-captain Kate Kovenock led the Camel women, qualifying for the NCAA’s in the 100 (52.04) and 200 (1:54.89) freestyles. Kovenock also set a new school record in the 50-yard butterfly (27.05). The meet began on a high note, when the team of Molly Goettsche, Kate Derr, Liz Lingo, and Kata Franczyk won the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:56.48. Freshmen distance stars Ali Wilson and Puni Almony followed up with a 1-2 finish in the 1000 freestyle. Wilson’s time of 10:48.80 shattered the previous school record by nearly 15 seconds.

Other Camel wins included Kata Franzcyk in the 50 Backstroke (29.79), Kate Derr in the 50 Breaststroke (32.56), Ali Wilson in the 500 freestyle (5:19.74), and Ali McDonald in the one and 3-meter diving competition. The meet was eventually determined by the last relay. The team of Kata Franzcyk, Rysia Murphy, Ali Wilson, and Kate Kovenock won in a convincing fashion with a time of 3:38.99 shattering the previous school record by 5 seconds.

On the men’s side, sophomore co-captains Alex Hoyt and Andrew Dutton led the Camels with some record setting performances. The tandem won three events apiece, Hoyt broke his own record in the 50 butterfly with a time of 24.37 and Dutton set a new school record in the 100 butterfly in a time of 55.95. Connecticut College won 12 of the 16 events against UMass Dartmouth.

The team of Alex Hoyt, Bob Kyne, Sam Nasuti, and Adam Phillips won the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:45.42. Freshmen Sam Garner won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:28.65. Other Camel wins included Adam Phillips in the 200 freestyle, Alex Hoyt in the 50 and 100 backstrokes, Andrew Dutton in the 400 IM and the 500 freestyle, Bob Kyne in the 50 and 100 breaststrokes, and the team of Adam Phillips, Nate Borgelt, Zach Landry, and Andrew Dutton won the 400 freestyle relay.

2003-2004 Preview

The Connecticut College Swimming and Diving team is as optimistic as ever about the up and coming season.

Led by co-captains Lisa Bartels and Kate Kovenock, the Camel women return with solid depth and a talented corps of freshmen. Kovenock, a five-time All-America selection, is coming off a sensational sophomore season where she finaled at the NCAA Championship in three events. Sophomores Molly Goettsche, Kate Derr, and Lexie Zukowski look to contribute significantly in the backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle events respectively.

For the freshmen women, Hawaians’, Ali Wilson and Puni Almony will improve the distance freestyle events for the young Camel team. In the sprint events, freshmen Kata Franczyk and Rysia Murphy will improve the depth of relays.

The Camel men are even younger than the women. Led by sophomore co-captains Alex Hoyt and Andrew Dutton, the team added many new freshmen faces. For the freshmen, distance specialists Samuel Garner and Adam Phillips will look to make their mark in the NESCAC. Freshman Bob Kyne joins the Camel men and will look to compete with the top breaststrokers in the conference.

The Camels will make their first appearance in Lott Natatorium Saturday, December 6 with a NESCAC meet against Trinity College.

3/31: Kovenock Retains All-America Status-Brendan Boyle Earns Honorable Mention at Nationals in Atlanta

New London, Conn. --Sophomore Kate Kovenock (Orono, ME) retained her All-America status at the NCAA Division III National Championship in Atlanta, GA. Kovenock finished fourth in the 50-yard freestyle, fifth in the 100-yard freestyle and was fifth in the 200-yard free. Just a sophomore, Kovenock is now a five time All-American for the Camels. The Camel men finished 38th in the nationals at Atlanta. Senior diver Brendan Boyle (Hingham, MA) posted a 10th place finish in the 1-meter dive and was 17th in the 3-meter dive. Boyle's performance earned him All-American recognition as an honorable mention.

3/3: Camel Men Finish 10th at NESCAC Championship Meet

Senior Brendan Boyle Earns All-Conference Accolades in Diving

New London, Conn. --The Connecticut College men's swimming team completed its successful 2002-2003 swimming season with a 10th place finish at the NESCAC Championship in Williamstown, MA this past weekend. The Camels finished with 423.5 points, scoring the highest ever point total for the program at a conference championship meet. Three school records were shattered at the meet and senior captain Brendan Boyle (Hingham, MA) turned in another outstanding performance in diving competition.

Freshman Andrew Dutton of Ledyard set a new record in the 400-yard individual medley, finishing in 4:26. In the 50-yard butterfly, freshman Alex Hoyt (Orange, CT) set a new Camel record, posting a time of 24:69. Josh Garner (Glendale, WI) and Wynne Breed (McLean, VA) teamed up with Dutton and Hoyt for a seventh place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, posting a record-breaking time of 1:39.65.

Brendan Boyle continued to dominate the diving boards, finishing second in the one and 3-meter dive events, automatically placing him on the NESCAC All-Conference squad. Josh Garner placed seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke. In the 400-yard medley relay, the foursome Garner, Hoyt, Dutton and Zachary Landry (Coventry, CT) finished seventh with a time of 3:50.16. In the 800-yard freestyle relay, Pike Severance (Manchester, NH), Wynne Breed, Andrew Dutton and Landry finished eighth for the Camels.

2/24: Kovenock Leads Camels at NESCAC Championship

New London, Conn. --The Connecticut College women's swimming team placed ninth at the NESCAC Conference Championship meet at Bowdoin College Saturday afternoon. Sophomore All-America Kate Kovenock (Orono, ME) paced the Camels to a respectable finish with 534 total team points. Kovenock set a NESCAC Championship meet record and a Connecticut College program record in the 200-yard free, posting a time of 1:53.14. Swimming in her home state, Kovenock also recorded victories in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle races, with respective time of 23.90 and 52.90.

A pair of Camel freshmen turned in strong performances in their respective individual events. Kate Derr (Old Greenwich, CT) finished seventh in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of :32.04. Molly Goettsche (Clinton, CT) placed sixth in the 50-yard backstroke event, finishing in :29.07.

The Camels also set three additional school records at the championship meet. In the 200-yard medley relay, the foursome of Molly Goettsche, Kate Derr, Kate Kovenock, and Lexie Zukowski (Plainfield, NJ) set a new program record with a time of 1:53.57. The previous record had stood since 1990. In the 400-yard medley relay, Molly Goettsche, Kate Derr, Kate Kovenock and Gabrielle Zandan (Austin, TX) posted a record-breaking time of 4:08.51. In the 200-yard free relay, Molly Goettsche, Kate Kovenock, Gabrielle Zandan and Lexie Zukowski teamed up for a record setting finish of 1:41.72.

2/11: Camel Men and Women Drop Meet to Bates, Finish Season With Winning Records

New London, Conn. --The Connecticut College swimming teams were in action this Saturday against Bates College in Lott Natatorium. The Camel men were defeated 169-109 while the women dropped a 192-104 decision to the Bobcats. Despite the defeats, the Camels still had some fine performances.

For the Camel men, senior Josh Garner won both the 100 and 200-yard breaststrokes. Zach Landry was victorious in the 200-yard freestyle. Senior captain Brendan Boyle won the 1-meter diving event and Andrew Dutton won the 200-yard individual medley.

In the women's meet, Molly Goettsche, Kate Derr, Kate Kovenock, and Lexie Zukowski combined to set a new Connecticut College record in the 200-yard Medley Relay with a time of 1:55.22. Sophomore All-American Kate Kovenock captured first place in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterffly. Freshman Molly Goettsche placed first in the 10-yard Backstroke and the 200-yard individual medley.

The Camel men finish the season at 5-3 while the women are 10-4.

2/1: Camel Men Down Wheaton 135-95

NEW LONDON, CT. --The Connecticut College men's swimming team (5-2) assured themselves of ending the season with a winning record, notching a 135-95 victory against Wheaton College in Lott Natatorium this afternoon.

Freshman Andrew Dutton (Ledard, CT) placed first in the 1000 and 500-yard freestyle races. Dutton timed out at 10:53.07 in the 1000-yard distance and completed the 500-yard race in 5:13.42. ECAC Division III Diver of the Week Brendan Boyle (Hingham, MA) had a solid afternoon, sweeping his two events in the one and 3-meter dive. Boyle scored 283.27 in the 1-meter and 291.82 in the 3-meter dive. Alex Hoyt (Orange, CT) placed first in the 200-yard individual (2:11.32) medley and the 100-yard backstroke (:59.63).

The Camels will host Bates College this Saturday in Lott Natatorium.

1/30: Kate Kovenock Tabbed as ECAC Division III Swimmer of the Week

NEW LONDON, CT. -- Connecticut College sophomore swimmer Kate Kovenock, a 2001 graduate of Orono High School, was selected as the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Swimmer of the Week for the week ending January 25 .

Kovenock captured first place in five events for the Camels who were 3-0 this week. Friday night, Kovenock took first in the 50-yard freestyle (24.29 pts) and the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.4. On Saturday afternoon, in a dual meet with Clark and Colby Sawyer, Kovenock captured 1st place in both 100 and 200-yard freestyle events, qualifying for the NCAAs in both distances and timing out at 1:55.67 in the 200-yard distance. She also placed first in the 50-yard butterfly with 27.71 points.

Kovenock earned All-American honors in swimming last year at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championship. Currently undecided as to her major, Kovenock is a Dean's List student at the college.

1/30: Brendan Boyle Named ECAC Division III Diver of the Week

NEW LONDON, Conn--Connecticut College senior diver Brendan Boyle, a 1999 graduate of Boston College High School and resident of Hingham, MA, was tabbed as the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Diver of the week for the week ending January 25.

Boyle swept his four diving events this week and set a school record in the 1-meter event. Friday night against Wesleyan, Boyle scored 282.98 in the 1-meter dive event and 269.1 in the 3-meter event. Saturday afternoon in a duel meet with Clark and Colby Sawyer, Boyle set a new school record with 302.1 in the 1-meter event and scored a 295.5 in the 3-meter distance.

Boyle was named Most Outstanding Performer for the Camels and earned an honorable mention for the All-American honors at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in both 2000 and 2001. An active member of Amnesty International and a Dean's List student at the college, Boyle will graduate in May with a double major in English and Philosophy.

1/25: Camel Men & Women Sweep Clark & Colby Sawyer

NEW LONDON, Conn. --The Connecticut College men and women's swim teams each recorded victories over Clark University and Colby Sawyer College this afternoon in Lott Natatorium. The women improved to 10-3 with a 159-125 victory over Clark and a 108-62 victory against Colby Sawyer. The men earned a 75-58 win over Colby Sawyer and a 155-111 victory against Clark.

Sophomore Kate Kovenock (Orono, ME) captured first place in the 100 and 200-yard freestyle events, qualifying for the NCAA championship in both distances. Kovenock also finished first in the 50-yard butterfly. Molly Goettsche (Clinton, CT) was victorious in the 50 and 200-yard backstroke events. Kate Derr (Old Greenwich, CT) notched victories in the 50 and 200-yard breaststroke events. Heidi Freeman (Barrington, IL) qualified for the NCAAs with victories in both the one and three meter diving events.

Senior captain Brendan Boyle (Hingham, MA) was victorious in both one and three meter diving events. Boyle set a school record in the one-meter event. Josh Garner (Glendale, WI) placed first in the 50 and 200-yard breaststroke events. Alex Hoyt (Orange, CT) finished first in the 50 and 200-yard backstroke events. Andrew Dutton captured first in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle events.

Friday night, Molly Goettsche placed first and set a school record in the 400 yard individual medley with a time of 5:00.46, highlighting a 125-118 come from behind victory over Wesleyan in Lott Natatorium. Goettsche also captured first place in the 100-yard backstroke. Sophomore Kate Kovenock followed up her strong performance at RPI with a first place finish in the 50-yard freestyle and 100 yard butterfly. Heidi Freeman recorded 1st place finishes in the one and three meter diving events. The Camel women are 8-3.

The Camel men were defeated 139-81 but still had some terrific individual performances. Andrew Dutton shattered a school record in the 400-yard individual medley, timing out at 4:30.77, fifteen seconds faster than the previous mark. Alex Hoyt swam his personal best in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in 57.63.

1/18: Kate Kovenock Qualifies for NCAA Championship: Camel Women Finish Second at RPI Invitational

NEW LONDON, Conn. --The Connecticut College women's swimming team improved to 7-3 with a strong performance at the RPI Invitational in Troy, NY this Saturday afternoon. In the invitational format, the Camels finished second out of seven schools behind SUNY Cortland with 382 points. In the dual meets, the Camels lost to SUNY Cortland but beat six other institutions.

Sophomore Kate Kovenock (Orono, ME) posted times of 23.35 in the 50-yard and 51.31 in the 100-yard freestyle events. Both finishes for Kovenock were school and NESCAC Conference records, as well as NCAA automatic qualifying times. Senior captain Keri Ouellette (Bourne, MA) scored personal bests in the 1000 (11:59.41) and 500 (5:52.45) yard freestyle events. Freshman Molly Goettsche (Clinton, CT) finished with her fastest time in the 200-yard backstroke, timing out at 2:19.45.

Lisa Bartels (Brookline, MA) placed second in the 200-yard freestyle event, timing out at 2:06.72. Senior Heidi Freeman (Barrington, IL) placed first in the 1-Meter Dive event (228.95) and second in the 3-Meter Dive Event (234.05). Freshman Kate Derr (Old Greenwich, CT) posted a time of 2:37.02, placing second in the 200-yard breast event. The Camels are 7-3 overall.

1/16: Camels Drop Meet to Coast Guard

12/8: Camels Split With Trinity-Men Pull Out Win-Women Set Three Pool Records in Narrow Defeat

NEW LONDON, Conn. --The Connecticut College swimming teams had a productive afternoon in the NESCAC opener at Trinity College Saturday. The men's squad defeated Trinity 156 to 111 and won 11 out of 16 events. Josh Garner (Glendale, WI) set a pool record in the 50-yard Breaststroke with a time of 28.46. He also won the 100-yard Breaststroke. Andrew Dutton (Ledyard, CT) won both the 1000 and 500-yard Freestyles as well as the 100-yard butterfly. Alex Hoyt (Orange, CT) won the 50 and 100-yard backstrokes and the 50 yard butterfly. Senior co-captain Pike Severance (Manchester, NH) won the 200 Freestyle.

The women's club dropped a close one to Trinity, 146-156. The Camels pulled out victories in 10 out of 16 events and set 3 pool records in the process. The 200 Medley Relay team of Molly Goettsche (Clinton, CT), Kate Derr (Old Greenwich, CT), Kate Kovenock (Orono, ME), and Lisa Bartels (Brookline, MA) won and set a pool record of 1:56.43. Kate Kovenock won and set a pool record of 1:00.55 in the 100-yard butterfly. The 400-yard Free Relay of Lexie Zukowski (Plainfield, NJ), Gabrielle Zandan (Austin, TX), Lisa Bartels, and Kate Kovenock won and set a pool record of 3:48.45. Kate Kovenock recorded victories in the 100-yard butterfly and the 500-yard freestyle. Kate Derr registered wins in the 50 and 100 breaststrokes. Lexie Zukowski won the 50-yard Free, and Gabrielle Zandan won the 100-yard Free. Heidi Freeman (Barrington, IL) won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.

11/20: A New Era Begins in Connecticut College Swimming

First year head coach Marc Benvenuti is getting acquainted with the picturesque sunrise on the Thames River as he prepares for his morning practices in Lott Natatorium. It's the dawning of a new day in Connecticut College Aquatics and the forecast is looking bright. A five time All-American at Tufts University, Benvenuti is familiar with the competitive terrain of the NESCAC Conference. The Camels open the season in Lott Natatorium on Saturday, November 23rd against UMass Dartmouth. Here's a breakdown of the 2002-2003 Camels.

Freshman Andrew Dutton of Mystic and Ledyard High School should provide steady contributions in several events. (Distance, Individual Medley, Butterfly) Freshman Alex Hoyt (Orange, CT) should be another solid performer in distance events. Senior captain Brendan Boyle (Hingham, MA) will provide leadership and is one of Benvenuti's top divers. Senior captain Pike Severance (Manchester, NH) will compete in mid-distance events. Senior Josh Garner (Glendale, WI) will swim the breaststroke. To prepare his troops mentally, Benvenuti will move his teams to South Florida for two weeks after the holidays as they prepare for conference competition in a more temperate environment.

Benvenuti has some solid depth on the women's squad. Sophomore All-American Kate Kovenock (Orono, ME) is coming off an outstanding rookie season for the Camels. Kovenock finished fourth nationally in the 50 Yard freestyle competition last March. She claimed two NESCAC Championships in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle and led the Camels to a 13-2 finish last winter. Seniors Heidi Freeman (Barrington, IL) and Keri Ouellette (Sagamore Beach, MA) will serve as co-captains. Freeman will compete in diving events while Ouellette will participate in distance races. Freshman Molly Goettsche is a local product out of Clinton, CT. Goettsche will swim the backstroke and individual medley races. Another freshman that should make an impact in the breaststroke is Greenwich, CT product Kate Derr. Alexis Zukowski (Plainfield, NJ) is another newcomer who will score points in the backstroke.


8/05: Benvenuti Named Head Men's & Women's Swim Coach and Aquatics Director

NEW LONDON, Conn. --Marc Benvenuti, a former assistant coach at Princeton University and a native of Waterford, Conn., was named the men's and women's swim coach and director of aquatics at Connecticut College.

As a lead assistant coach to Princeton men's swim program for the past two years, Benvenuti's tutelage contributed to a Tiger squad that posted a lofty 17-2 (.894) mark in the Ivy League. Four Princeton swimmers advanced to the NCAA Championships and one qualified for Olympic competition in Sydney, Australia.

Benvenuti earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and environmental studies from Tufts University. A five-time All-American with the Jumbos, Benvenuti has already left his mark as one of the top swimmers in NESCAC conference history. Benvenuti still holds numerous records at Tufts, including the 50-yard butterfly, the 200-yard medley relay, and the 400-yard medley relay.

Benvenuti replaces Ken Ralph, who served as director of the Camel aquatics program the past four years. Last season, the women's program finished with a 13-2 record while the men were 4-5.
