NEW LONDON, Conn. --Connecticut College senior captains Lauren Luciano and Kate Machemer have been honored by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). Lauren Luciano has been named to the second team of the New England All-Region Squad and Machemer has been tabbed to the IWLCA Academic Honor roll.

This past winter, Machemer captained the Camel swimming team that finished with a 10-4 record. Machemer was also a member of the a cappella group the Vox Cameli, and served on the Health Promotion Risk Reduction (HPRR) committee. 4/9: Senior Spotlight: Camel Captains are Ready to Take the Lead

The Connecticut College women's lacrosse team picked up its first NESCAC victory against Bates College Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, instead of scooping up groundballs, the Camels could only make snowballs Tuesday, as a spring snowstorm halted athletic activity on campus. Connecticut College has three talented seniors captaining this year's squad.

Caley Boyd recently completed her hockey career as the all-time assist leader at Connecticut College. Boyd netted a team-high 32 goals last season for the lacrosse squad and tallied a hat-trick in a 16-8 victory over Bates Saturday afternoon. Lauren Luciano captained a successful Camel soccer program this fall that recorded four straight wins and advanced to the semifinal round of the NESCAC Championship Tournament. Luciano has scooped up a team-high 20 ground balls through seven games.

Kate Machemer captained the Connecticut College swimming team that enjoyed a successful 10-4 season. Machemer is leading a defensive corps that has consistently improved since the beginning of the year. While the three come from different backgrounds, they share a common bond. They have all served as captains in another sport and understand the importance of team leadership.

Playing on a team that is loaded with freshman is not a new experience for Caley Boyd. The Camel hockey team had 11 freshman on the roster this winter, compared to the lacrosse squad that has 10 newcomers. Boyd is confident that her coach Annie Crosby has steered the program in the right direction.

"I think that coach has done a great job." Boyd asserted. "Even before the season started, you can see the hard work she has done recruiting players and making us better."

Luciano echoes the enthusiasm of her teammate and is very optimistic about this young Camel team.

"I think we have a great group of girls," Luciano stated. "Obviously we are going to be really young. We also have a substantial group of juniors and seniors that will help balance things out."

Luciano emphasizes to her team the need to be consistent regardless of the strength or weakness of the opponent. It is a strategy that helped the Camel women's soccer program win 10 games in the fall.

"We have a lot of soccer player on our lacrosse team," Luciano stated. "Going from our high at the end of the season is only going to help this team because we are focusing on every team being the same. We weren't scared of the Middlebury or the Amherst and I think that the freshmen picked up on that."

While the three captains share some strengths, they each bring a different leadership style to the team. Kate Machemer believes that the team is comfortable in approaching any of the captains at any time.

"We all have very different leadership styles but we work well with each other," said Machemer. "The team can go to any one of us."

Machemer believes the Camels may be turning the corner this spring and she's happy to be taking the lead.

"I think we are a more skilled team with much more depth. It can only work to our advantage and I think we are going to turn some heads this year."

The Camels will host Mount Holyoke College Thursday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. on Harkness Green.

3/15: Gettysburg 13, Connecticut College 3

Orlando, FL. - The Connecticut College Women's Lacrosse team dropped its season opener Saturday afternoon, falling to Gettysburg 13-3 at the Disney Complex in Orlando, FL.

Freshman midfielder Kelsey Sullivan (Northfield, MA) netted two scores for the Camels. Abigail Ritchie (Newton, MA) added a goal for Connecticut College. Junior Catherine Clarke assisted on the tally.

The Camels trailed 10-1 after one half and were out-scored by Gettysburg 3-2 in the final 30 minutes.

2003 Season Preview

Patience and determination are two key ingredients necessary in any winning program. Second year coach Anne Crosby was patient with her young Camels in 2001. If results proved anything, Crosby's patience and the work ethic she instilled in her athletes paid dividends by season end. After a 2-6 start, the Camels were winners in three of the last six contests. Now that the foundation has been set, Crosby and the Camels are ready to reach new heights in 2003. The season kicks off with two competitive non-conference matches against Gettysburg and Dickinson College in Orlando, Florida. The Camels open conference play at home against 2002 NCAA Division III Champion Middlebury College March 22.

Attack

Senior tri-captain Caley Body emerged as an offensive star in her junior season. Boyd netted a team-high 32 goals and was the top point producer for the Camels with 37 points. Junior Catherine Clark netted 17 goals and added eight assists in 2002. Clark's classmate, Abigail Ritchie netted 12 goals in nine games. Sophomore Sarah Tacy netted five goals with seven assists in her rookie season and will be relied on for offensive punch.

Midfield

Senior tri-captain Lauren Luciano will lead a group that is mainly comprised of underclassmen. Luciano netted seven goals with four assists in the 2002 season. Emily Stieff demonstrated her potent offensive skills with 24 goals and a team-high 41 ground balls last season. Junior Sarah Lane has scooped up 47 ground balls over the last two seasons and should be a regular in the Camel lineup. Sophomores Susan Getty and Mary Scott will also contribute.

Defense

The Camels will have a huge void to fill with the graduation of Anna Hitchner. Hitchner was a second team All-NESCAC Selection and an Academic All-American in 2002. Senior tri-captain Kate Machemer will anchor the Camel defensive corps this spring. Junior Kyle Ridgway has experienced and tallied 16 ground balls while appearing in all 14 contests last season. Sophomore Lindsey Marshall appeared in 12 games during her rookie campaign and should see significant minutes this season. Sophomores Amy Phelan will bolster the defensive set. Goalkeeper Paige Diamond logged every minute of the 2002 season and is ready to contribute this spring.

Freshman Class

Crosby hit the recruiting trail hard in her first season. The results should pay dividends this spring for the Camels, who have 10 talented newcomers on the 2003 roster. The rookie threesome of Maggie Driscoll, Margaret Bacon and Caite McNeil were all key members of the successful Camel soccer squad. Driscoll is continuing a successful family tradition of competing in Connecticut College athletics while Bacon is following her mother's footsteps as a successful student-athlete with the program. Melissa Ridgway will join her sister Ashley on the squad as a midfielder/defenseman. Kate Reardon and Alix Werner will vie for time in net. Reardon and Caitlin Connolly were members of the field hockey squad in the fall. Rookie Christine Cunha demonstrated her quickness as one of the top sprinters in the indoor track season. Other key additions to the squad include defenseman Perri Lawrie, and midfielder Kelsey Sullivan.
