Mellon postdoctoral fellowship, Toor-Cummings Center

Islam

The Toor Cummings Center for International Studies and the Liberal Arts (CISLA) at Connecticut College has an opening for a postdoctoral fellow whose field of scholarly inquiry is Islam.

CISLA promotes global thinking across academic disciplines and encourages students to become politically concerned, socially engaged and culturally sensitive. In the Center's certificate program, students enhance their major field with intensive foreign language study, a funded international internship, and a senior project that integrates their language proficiency, research interests, and study and professional experience abroad.

The CISLA Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow will be someone who can critically appraise the relationship between tradition and modernity in Islamic societies, draw connections between various aspects of Islamic culture across the globe, or illuminate interactions between Muslim and non-Muslim populations in an international setting.

We especially welcome applicants trained in interdisciplinary Middle East or Islamic Studies, Arabic Language and Literature, Journalism, Anthropology, History, or Sociology, but are interested in anyone who does not hold a doctorate in Political Science or Religion.

The Fellow will be one of four faculty members to team-teach the Center's Gateway Course, "Perspectives on Modern Global Society" and will personally direct the senior seminar that is required of students returning from their overseas experience. He/she will also advise CISLA senior integrative projects and offer upper-level seminars in his or her specialty that will be open to all Connecticut College students.

Interested applicants should send a C.V., cover letter, and three letters of recommendation to:
