CCBES Certificate Program in Environmental Studies

 

 

 

     

WELCOME BACK, CERTIFICATE STUDENTS!

The Center welcomed back their Certificate Students on September 10, 2009 at Buck Lodge in the Connecticut College Arboretum. The event was attended by returning juniors and seniors, 3 alums, Center Fellows and guests from the Career Enhancing Life Skills Department. Seniors shared a brief description of their summer internships
and plans for their senior integrative projects.

Juniors also told of their summer experiences and certainly will be looking forward to the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of their senior classmates in the summer of 2010 with their internships.

Students were introduced at Buck Lodge to the upcoming theme of the Certificate Seminar - “Politics, Ethics and Culture of Food.” Discussions will center on readings from Michael Pollan’s “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” and excerpts from Barbara Kingsolver’s, “Animal Vegetable, Miracle. Guest lecturers will include Dr. Karina Mrakovcich from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy addressing the topic of “Sustainable Fish Consumption;” Pauline Lord of the White Gate Farm in East Lyme, CT speaking to the topic of “The Organic Alternative;” and Jonathan Rapp, creator and co-founder of “Dinners at the Farm,” from Chester, CT, sharing his personal experience about the “Locavore Movement: Choosing between Local and Organic.”
