Melissa A. Pierce
As Title IX Coordinator, Melissa A. Pierce is responsible for monitoring and oversight of the overall implementation of Connecticut College’s Title IX compliance, including the coordination of training, education, communication and the administration of grievance procedures for faculty, staff, students and other members of the College community.
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 requires that all educational institutions that receive federal funds or financial assistance prohibit sex discrimination in their education programs and activities. Title IX’s prohibition of sex discrimination is broad and far-reaching. It includes prohibitions against all forms of sexual discrimination, including sexual harassment, sexual assault, dating/domestic violence and stalking, referred to collectively as "sexual misconduct."
Prior to her arrival at Connecticut College, Ms. Pierce spent 11 years as a criminal prosecutor, handling dozens of cases of sexual assault and domestic violence. She served on two community-based sexual assault resource teams as well as a multidisciplinary team that provided training to law enforcement. She went on to establish her own law firm, handling cases in probate and family court, as well as criminal defense.
