IS warns against ‘phishing’ e-mails
Information Services has installed filtering technology that eliminates most spam sent to campus addresses but Brian Walsh, information security officer, said there is another, more malicious form of e-mail fraud that is on the rise.
“It’s called ‘phishing,’ and it works by sending out e-mail messages that appear to be from legitimate companies,” he said, such as ebay, Citibank, PayPal and Citizens Bank. These messages, which look very official and may even copy the logos of the companies they claim to be from, are trying to trick users into clicking on a link to a Web site and enter confidential information, usually credit card numbers.
Walsh cautions campus users to delete such messages and never to enter any personal or confidential information unless you are certain you are at a legitimate company Web site.
