Handheld Device Registration

Handheld Device Registration

In order to use 802.11 capable handheld devices on the wireless network, such as iPhones or special Blackberry phones, you must register the device on the network by providing the MAC address (Physical or Hardware address).

Guide:
Finding and registering your handheld's MAC address

The MAC Address is also known as the physical address or hardware address. All Ethernet devices have one. In order to use your handheld device on the network, this address must be registered with the campus network registration system (also known as Cisco Clean Access). If you already know your handheld's MAC address, click here to register it.

Summary:
This guide shows you how to find and register the MAC address of some of the more popular handheld devices, such as an iPhone or BlackBerry. If you don't see your handheld device listed here check for a label on the back of the device, and/or with the manufacturers website for instructions on how to obtain the MAC Address. Other devices, such as Sony PSP, Nintendo DS Lite, Palm OS, Epoch OS, and Windows CE, can be used on the wireless network once registered.

How To Find The MAC Address of Your Apple iPhone

The Connecticut College wireless network is secured by restricting the MAC addresses, so you will have to enter the MAC address of your Apple iPhone in order for it to be allowed on the network.

To figure out the MAC address of your iPhone, start at the home menu. Select Settings -> General -> About. Scroll down that screen and you'll see a setting called "Wi-Fi Address," that is your iPhone MAC address.

Next, register it with Information Services.

Once you have done this, go back to your iPhone and go to the Settings menu again. Select Wi-Fi and it should display the ConnColl wireless network in the list of available networks to connect to as long as you are in range. Click the network name to connect.

How To Find The MAC Address of Your BlackBerry

For most BlackBerries, you can remove the back panel and the battery. You should then see a sticker which should tell you the MAC address. If you cannot locate the MAC address, please contact the Help Desk. You can then register it with Information Services.
