American Studies

Our American studies program is one of the strongest such liberal arts college programs in the country and every year is one of the top 10 majors at Connecticut College.

The American studies major that you'll experience at Connecticut College today is an innovative, dynamic major that focuses on two critical issues:

• race and ethnicity
• the role of the United States in the world

While examining the historical processes of racial formation, students are encouraged to adopt and think critically about texts and images from literature, the study of the arts, religion, and the social sciences. The study of the United States' role in the world includes its borderland regions in Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada.

Read a good book lately?

In 2010, American Studies advanced seminar, "The Globalization of American Culture," launched a new book review project aimed to keep students, faculty and alumni up to date with new works in the field of American Studies. The project continued for the students of the 2011 seminar. Read the reviews.

In particular, the 2011 seminar students highly recommend reading "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" and "Carjacked."
