Research in Anthropology

Anthropology department faculty are involved in exciting new research areas.

Some examples:

• Professor Cole is currently exploring the forms, uses and effects of ethnicity in Europe.
• Professor Anthony Graesch is pursuing two research streams, including the archaeological study of household organization on the Pacific Northwest Coast and the ways that human action is influenced by objects and built space in modern urban environments.
• Professor Catherine Benoit's research interests have developed in two directions that belong to the field of medical anthropology.
• Professor John Burton's recent publications range from emphasis on New Hampshire's White Mountains, to "Some Reflections on Anthropology's Missionary Positions" in the Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute.
• Professor Manuel Lizarralde grapples with questions of people and the environment on a daily basis in his teaching and research. He led a group of his students to spend a semester abroad on the first SATA Peru in the fall of 2007.

The department of anthropology enjoys a working and teaching relationship with the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center in nearby Mashantucket, Connecticut.

A selected list of anthropology resources for research is available from the Charles E. Shain Library at Connecticut College, maintained by the College's reference librarians. The guide helps students identify materials useful for research in anthropology. Reference librarians are always available to assist in the search for relevant reference books based on the ethnic group or region under study.
