Biological Sciences Major
The biological sciences major, which is offered jointly by the biology and the botany departments, provides diverse research opportunities and close student-faculty interactions that are designed to give you progressively more intensive experiences in research as you move through your course of study.
The major requirements consist of 15 courses:
- 6 core courses (4 in biology & 2 in general chemistry)
- 2 quantitative and physical science courses
- 5 electives
- 1 semester of the biology/botany/environmental studies seminar series
- 1 capstone course
You may choose from three options:
- a general program in biology
- an ecology concentration
- a cell and molecular concentration
You'll be encouraged to engage in a research project with a faculty mentor before you complete your undergraduate program. As a result, many of our students publish papers with faculty in peer-reviewed journals and present the results of their research at regional or national research conferences.
As you graduate with a degree in any of our majors, you'll be well-prepared to attend graduate school in any biological sciences field or professional school (medical, dental or veterinary) or immediately enter the job market in many science-related fields.
