Student Experience

A letter to prospective students

From David Dorfman, William Meredith Associate Professor of Dance:

I am pleased to learn that you are interested in the dance department at Connecticut College. I have a long and devoted history with the department dating to 1979 – my first year as a master's candidate. Now, over 25 years later, with 20 years of artistic directorship of David Dorfman Dance under my belt, I am thrilled to "return home" to my dance roots.

Beginning my fourth full year and second as department chair, I know you will find our department to be one of the finest professional and supportive dance environments within a liberal arts setting. Our highly qualified, experienced and masterful faculty work closely with the students to provide an intensive dancing and learning experience. In addition, numerous guest artists from New York City and beyond provide invaluable performance opportunities and state-of-the-art teaching during their residencies here.

You should know, too, that our dance students play an important role in our department's activities through the Student Advisory Board. Those serving during 2007-08 are Senior co-chairs: Rebecca Woll & Jenna Petok ; Juniors: Talia Wheeler, Emily Taylor & Cassie Roberston; Sophomores: Alex Kuhns & Sara Walkowitz and Freshmen: Madeline Merin & Leanna Price.

An audition is required in order to major in dance, but no audition is necessary for the dance minor. The auditions for high school seniors will be held on Monday, October 8, 2007 and Monday, November 12, 2007 at Connecticut College. The dance audition consists of attending a technique class and showing an individual piece (1 1/2 - 2 minutes) of any style. Learn all the particulars about our Audition process.

We hope you will visit the college. A visit provides an excellent opportunity for you to become acquainted with our college environment and the specifics of our unique department. I or other faculty members in the department will certainly be glad to meet with you, give you a tour, and answer any questions you might have concerning life at Connecticut College. You would also be welcomed to take one of our technique classes.  Please contact the Dance Department office to make audition arrangements.

Sincerely,
David Dorfman, William Meredith Associate Professor of Dance
Department Chair
