Dance
The Connecticut College department of dance invites applications for a faculty position (rank open).
We are a highly collaborative, internationally renowned department working in wide ranging traditions, styles and forms. We graduate ten serious dance majors per year and instruct over 300 students per semester. We embrace the College’s commitment to promoting the racial and ethnic diversity in its faculty, recognizing the richness that different human experiences bring to the teaching and creation of dance. We are also eager to broaden the genres and approaches taught in the department, including: non-Western forms, technology, somatics, dance studies, choreography, and production.
We are looking for a colleague with a national reputation as a creative artist and educator. Candidates of color are especially invited to submit applications. The candidate should be prepared to teach all levels, and in at least two of the areas mentioned above.
A successful candidate will exhibit a willingness to engage in cross-disciplinary opportunities involving other departments and modes of study, as well as to encourage student artistry in dance. Among expected responsibilities are: making one dance for the students per year, advising first-year students and majors, teaching a 3-2 load (2-2 in the first year), and, in time, rotating in as chair of the department.
An M.F.A. in dance, dance studies, choreography or commensurate professional experience is required, as well as demonstrable teaching experience with college-age students and in the context of college and/or university settings. Review of applications will begin on November 15, 2009, and continue until the position is filled. Salary is competitive.
Connecticut College educates students to put the liberal arts into action as citizens in a global society. A private, highly selective institution in New London, Connecticut, mid-way between New York and Boston, the College is notable for its strong academic programs, friendly campus, and emphasis on broad interdisciplinary teaching and research. With a student/faculty ratio of 10/1, students learn from their professors in classrooms, studios, labs, and across the residential campus and the entire globe. The intimate size of our community (approximately 1900 students from 45 states and 70 countries) fosters collaboration among faculty, staff and students. Faculty members are expected to contribute to the College’s general education program, which includes a first-year seminar component, and to the shared governance of the College through service on committees.
The College’s Board of Trustees, President, administration, faculty and staff share a commitment to diversity. We foster the values of equity, inclusion, and respect for all human differences, for these are essential to the fulfillment of our mission. Recognizing that intellectual vitality and diversity are inseparable, the College has embarked on a significantly successful initiative to diversify its faculty, student body and curriculum. Structural evidence of this commitment are represented in our Center for Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity, the positions of senior diversity officer and dean of multicultural affairs created several years ago, our Unity House Multicultural Center, and the diversity programming sponsored by many departments across the campus. The College is also an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer. The college is a member of the Academic Career Network; a resource for dual career couples (http://acn.fivecolleges.edu).
