Student Seminar Series

Each semester, the department offers weekly mathematics talks.  During the early part of the semester, talks are given by the faculty or invited speakers from other colleges and universities.  During the later par of the semester, the talks are given by senior mathematics majors as part of their coursework.  Tea and snacks are provided before the start of each talk.

Julia Wells Bower Lecture

The annual Julia Wells Bower Lecture brings an engaging speaker to campus to give a talk intended for a general audience on a topic in mathematics with wide reaching appeal.  Previous Bower Lecture speakers include:

  • Ed Berger - Author of Coincidences, Chaos, and All That Math Jazz: Making light of weighty ideas and The Heart of Mathematics: An invitation to effective thinking

  • Joe Gallian - President of the Mathematical Association of America

  • Alan Schwarz - Sports columnist for the New York Times and ESPN, and author of The Numbers Game: Baseball's Lifelong Fascination With Statistics
