CEDS Facilities, Equipment and Recording Studio
The CEDS Lab boasts 7 modern workstations, all running OS 10.3.3 (Panther). Three machines use 1.6Ghz G5 processors, while the other four are Dual 1.25Ghz G4 machines.
All machines run Pro Tools 6.3 and Max/MSP through either a Digidesign 001 or 002, as well as other software, explained below. All workstations are connected to at least one synthesizer, an 88 key MIDI keyboard, a 16 channel digital mixing board, and a pair of high-quality studio monitors (loudspeakers). CD duplicating and printing equipment is available. All machines are networked to the College network.
We teach on the Roland XV-5050 synthesizer, a powerful, fully programmable, multi-timbral synth. We have many other synthesizers, samplers, and effects processors available, as well as a variety of microphones appropriate for recording a wide variety of sources.
Pro Tools is the industry standard in multi-track recording and editing. Our Digidesign hardware is high quality, offering crystal clear sound on 8 inputs and 8 outputs.
Max/MSP is a graphical programming environment for audio projects. It works with both audio data and MIDI, allowing for it to be used to build and implement a wide variety of ideas, projects, and tools, ranging from digitally constructing a dynamic range compressor, to creating an entirely new and customizable digital instrument. Max/MSP is much easier to learn and work with than a lower level programming language such as C++ or even Java. Much more about Max/MSP is available from Cycling 74.
Sibelius is a musical notation program, allowing a high level of customization over musical scores, and interfaces with Pro Tools via MIDI import and export.
Turbosynth is an additive synthesis program used for creating sounds from their component waveforms.
Connecticut College Recording Studio
The recording studio is home to the brand new Pro Tools HD 32 channel recording setup. It is connected to Fortune Hall, Evans Hall and the CEDS Lab with multi-channel recording capability. The studio is equipped with an isolation booth for recording vocals, and several high quality microphones.
The Connecticut College recording studio offers recording and mixing services to the College community and to the public. From time to time, jobs as recording assistants are available for qualified and interested students.
