New for 2007/08

Beginning in the 2007/08 academic year, each student taking Elementary Russian will receive an iPod containing authentic cultural materials (such as popular music, folk songs, poetry, music videos, cartoons) and language exercises. Additionally, all students in the course will take a ten-day, all expenses paid TRIP to Russia during spring break 2008 as part of the Elementary Russian sequence. Before the trip the class will communicate via video-conference with students in St. Petersburg to establish ties and develop Russian language skills.

Special events for fall 2007

October 6: Trip to Norwich to attend the Fall Festival of the Russian Orthodox Church of the Holy New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia

October 7: Trip to New Haven to attend a concert by the Russian rock group, Gogol Bordello [hyperlink to ]

October 24: Screening of the film Russian Language Abroad at 4:00 p.m. (location TBA), followed by a talk-back with the director, Natalia Foshko

Annual Events

The Slavic Department hosts a number of annual events for Slavic Studies students and the entire campus. Some of the most popular are:

  • Elka (Christmas) Celebration in December, with Slavic cuisine and music by the Connecticut College Slavic Chorus.
  • Russian Maslenitsa (Carnival) in the spring, featuring traditional Russian blini and poetry readings by Slavic Studies students and faculty
  • Russian Paskha (Easter) Celebration, with the traditional Russian paskha (four-sided pyramid cream cheese dessert)
  • Film Series of Russian, Czech, and Polish cinema
  • Public lectures by visiting faculty and Slavic Studies alumni
