Slavic Studies

Interdisciplinarity

The Slavic Studies Department has long been a leader in interdisciplinary studies at the College: our program has drawn on a variety of academic disciplines for decades, and during the 2003/04 academic year the department organized a year-long faculty seminar and lecture series on interdisciplinarity at the College.

The Slavic Studies major includes courses in language, literature, linguistics, art history, film, gender studies, theater, history, environmental studies, and government. In addition, our program is flexible in its design: all students majoring in Slavic Studies meet with the department chair to develop a plan of study that incorporates their individual interests.

Students majoring in Slavic Studies may also earn a certificate from one of the College's innovative interdisciplinary centers. Many of our students combine a Slavic Studies major with an international studies certificate through the Toor Cummings Center for International Studies and the Liberal Arts (CISLA).

Students may also earn a certificate from one of the College's 3 other interdisciplinary centers, whose programs include a challenging combination of coursework, original research, and a funded summer internship in the U.S. or abroad:

  • Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology
  • Goodwin-Niering Center for Conservation Biology and Environmental Studies
  • Holleran Center for Community Action and Public Policy

Launched in 2005, the Center for the Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity is the College's hub for researching and teaching race and ethnicity across the disciplines.
