Contact Stan Ching.
A professor of chemistry at Connecticut College, Stan Ching has taught a wide variety of chemistry courses, including lectures and laboratories for General Chemistry, Advanced General Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Advanced Inorganic Chemistry, and Instrumental Methods of Analysis. He has also taught the Molecular Science course for non-science majors. As part of his teaching, he also mentors students in research projects through independent study, honors study, and summer research.
Ching's research interest is in the area of inorganic materials chemistry. His current research program is focused on developing new synthetic routes to microporous and nanostructured manganese oxides. Many of these are naturally occurring minerals found in soils, sediments, marine manganese nodules, and desert rock varnish. Such materials have attracted considerable interest due to their potential applications in heterogeneous catalysis, toxic waste remediation, and rechargeable battery technology.
Connecticut College undergraduates play a major role in Ching's research and have made many valuable contributions and discoveries, frequently earning co-authorship on peer-reviewed articles. Ching's research has received funding from the Research Corporation, the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, and the National Science Foundation.
Among Ching's professional activities, he has served as Secretary to the Editorial Board for the Inorganic Syntheses series since 1999. He has also helped organize conferences at Connecticut College, having been one of the local site coordinators for the national meeting of the Council on Undergraduate Research in 2002 and an organizer of the American Chemical Society – Connecticut Valley Section (ACS-CVS) Undergraduate Research Symposium in 2009.
Ching is also actively involved with the intercollegiate athletic program at Connecticut College. He has been the Faculty Athletics Representative to the NCAA since 1994 and volunteered as an assistant coach for women's volleyball from 1992-1998. In 2002-2003, Ching served as Interim Director of Athletics and Chair of Physical Education. The following year, he chaired the planning committee for the College's new fitness center and multipurpose exercise rooms. He has also been involved in the College Sports Project sponsored by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
Ching enjoys a variety of recreational activities, including cycling, hiking, kayaking and yard work.
