CISLA Postdoctoral Fellow

Toor Cummings Center for International Studies and the Liberal Arts (CISLA)

Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in Islam

Position has been filled.

The Toor Cummings Center for International Studies and the Liberal Arts Connecticut College (CISLA) seeks a postdoctoral fellow in Islam.

This is a two-year appointment, commencing in fall 2009, that emphasizes both teaching and scholarship. The fellowship is one of five at the College supported by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

CISLA promotes global thinking across academic disciplines and encourages students to become politically concerned, socially engaged and culturally sensitive. In the Center's certificate program, students enhance their major field with intensive foreign language study; a funded international internship; and a senior project that integrates their language proficiency, research interests, and experience abroad.

The CISLA Mellon postdoctoral fellow will be someone who can critically appraise the relationship between tradition and modernity in Islamic societies, draw connections among various aspects of Islamic culture across the globe, or illuminate interactions between Muslim and non-Muslim populations in an international setting. We are looking for someone who will complement the College's strengths in Middle East politics and Islam as a religion, so we welcome applicants trained in interdisciplinary Middle East or Islamic studies, Arabic language and literature, journalism, anthropology, history or sociology. Applicants must be on track to receive their degrees by July 1, 2009 or have done so in the last four years.

All Mellon postdoctoral fellows will attend bi-weekly workshops on teaching methods sponsored by the Joy Schectman Mankoff Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and give a yearly public presentation on a topic related to their research. Fellows may also advise students who are interested in their field of specialization and/or work with a faculty member on a collaborative research project. The CISLA fellow will join the teaching team in the Center's gateway course, "Perspectives on Modern Global Society," held in the spring, participate in the senior seminar that is required of students returning from their overseas experience in the fall, help choose the incoming class, and otherwise participate in the life of the Center. He or she will also offer one or two specialized courses open to all Connecticut College students.

The Mellon Fellowships offer a stipend of $53,500 per year, plus benefits, as well as an additional stipend to help offset expenses for research, scholarly activities, and travel.
