Common Witchhazel

This month's featured plant, Hamamelis virginiana, common witchhazel, is the last of the woody plants to flower. Typically, the yellow, fragrant, strap-like crumpled petals emerge during October and November, after foliage drop. The leaves turn shades of yellow in the fall and can be spectacular. A native shrub, the common witchhazel is valuable in a naturalistic border.
