Environmental Policies
Energy Conservation and Efficiency Policy (2007 draft – pending adoption)
This policy would commit College community members to implement energy conservation and efficiency measures. Energy Star certified products would be required as would energy efficient light fixtures and bulbs and water-conserving products. The policy calls for computers and peripherals to be turned off at the end of each day or if anticipated to be inactive for four hours or more. To limit energy loss, removing or covering air conditioners during winter months and weatherizing are advocated. Building renovations and construction would integrate energy conservation and efficiency measures and LEED guidelines would be followed. This policy will be re-addressed by the Environmental Model Committee and others in Fall, 2008.
Invasive Plant Removal Policy (Adopted December, 2005)
The Arboretum intends to manage invasive plant populations on campus with the goal of eradicating invasives when possible and practical or maintaining low, controlled levels if eradication is not practical. An Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach will be used that integrates mechanical, biological and chemical methods, evaluating the other options before applying selective herbicides. Green Building Policy (Adopted March, 2005)
Through the Connecticut College Green Building Policy, the College committed to using a recognized set of green building guidelines such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) including using green building materials and improving indoor air quality. The policy advocates green cleaning products and maintenance methods. Energy efficient systems for heating, lighting and transportation should exceed standards and there should be consideration of alternative energy sources. Renewable Energy Policy (Adopted December, 2004)
The student body resolved to continue the established policy of adding $25 to the student comprehensive fee for ten years to be used toward purchasing renewable energy. This can be done by purchasing from the source of generation, through equipment purchase to establish renewable energy sources on campus, through an electrical utility or the purchase of renewable energy certificates (RECs). Policy on Reduction of Paper Use (Adopted May, 1998)
The paper use policy was developed to reduce the amount of paper used and disposed by advocating reduction, reuse and recycling. This is encouraged through the use of electronic mail and existing campus publications for announcements. Paper use should be reduced by single-spacing and double-siding where possible. Departments and student clubs should limit poster printing to no more than 25. The policy calls for the campus community to recycle paper.
