Recycling
The Connecticut College Community Recycles
In the U.S., each person generates approximately 5 lbs. of solid waste (i.e. trash) each day. At Connecticut College, where nearly 1,800 students reside, this could amount to approximately 9,000 lbs/day. But there are ways to reduce the amount of material thrown "away" and we aggressively seek to employ them on our campus.
Recycling is a productive way to keep materials that can be re-manufactured out of the waste stream. Mixed paper, cardboard, aluminum, steel (tin) and glass are collected in bins placed throughout the College campus. These materials are brought to the regional transfer station for recycling. We also recycle food preparation remains from the campus dining halls; most is composted in our own campus "Earth Tubs" and the rest goes to a local piggery for "recycling."
See a bin? Toss it in! Help us "trim our waste!"
You are a big part of the solution. The best method for reducing waste is minimizing it at the source. Buy fewer packaged items or those with the least packaging, buy in bulk and use/reuse durable containers for single servings; print on paper that has text on one side or refill a plastic water bottle.
Please see our Reycling Guidelines.
