Renewable Energy Certificates
Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) are a market commodity created when one megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable electricity is generated and enters the power grid. Connecticut College has been offsetting its electricity purchase with RECs since 2002.
In 2006-07, the College was recognized with a U.S. EPA Green Power Partnership Program Award when we reached our goal to offset nearly 100% of our electricity purchase with Green-e Certified, 100% wind RECs.
For three consecutive years (2006-2009) the College has offset almost all of its electricity purchases with RECs thanks to the student body agreement to a $25 surcharge on the student comprehensive fee to support renewable energy. It is anticipated that as national demand for RECs grows, renewable energy will become more cost-effective per kWh.
