Reserve Policies
Electronic Reserves are made available to registered students through the
Moodle course management system.
Faculty may post course readings online by creating a scanned
PDF document or by linking directly to the Libraries’ licensed
full-text databases. The Libraries’ provide access to thousands
of licensed, full-text online journal articles through their
electronic databases. To link to these in Moodle
see Direct Linking to Full-Text Articles. Non-print audio,
video and graphic materials may also be digitized and linked
into Moodle. All electronic reserve materials must comply with
the Copyright
Act and the TEACH
Act (Technology, Education, and Copyright Harmonization
Act).
Procedures Faculty interested in providing electronic course materials
must first contact Diane
Creede, Instructional Designer/Developer (ext. 5145) to
establish a Moodle site for each course. Faculty are
responsible for the content and posting of all materials in
their Moodle site. Content for the course remains accessible to registered
students only for the duration of the course.
All
copies, whether in print or digitized form, must include a
notice of copyright: i.e.: © year of first publication, if
known, name of copyright holder, if known, and a full bibliographic
reference (author, title, journal title or book publisher,
and date).
Resources & Support The Moodle course management
system is supported by the Instructional
Technology team. Faculty can receive instruction and
assistance with the process of creating digital audio, video,
graphics and text PDF documents by contacting Frank
Fulchiero in the Digital
Curriculum Center. For assistance with foreign language
materials contact Marisa
Castagno (ext 5387) in the Language
Lab. For assistance in using the College’s image collection
or ARTstor contact Mark
Braunstein (ext 2729) in the Visual
Resources Library. Document scanners are also available
in Shain Library and the Greer Music
Library.
Print Reserves
Instructors place course
readings at the Reserve Desk, adjacent to Circulation. Materials
can be accessed in the libraries’ online catalog by instructor,
course name and number.
Shain Library will place on reserve library books, and audio
and videotapes, as well as other forms of multimedia, available
through the CTW Consortium. We also place personal copies
of books, audio and videotapes, journal articles, and other
types of personal items on reserve for your class. Materials
not accepted for reserve are library owned bound or unbound
periodicals and photocopied "custom" anthologies
without publisher's permission already received and documented.
Please note that requests for items to be placed on reserve
at the beginning of each semester should be submitted at least
two weeks in advance to allow adequate time to process the
items.
Library materials may be placed on reserve by submitting
a CTW Online catalog printout of each item (including Trinity
and Wesleyan books if not available at CC), by requesting them
electronically via the CTW
Online Catalog "Request" Function, or by retrieving
them directly from the stacks and bringing them to the Reserve
desk. Please include course number and indicate a loan
period from the following selection. Loan periods:
2 HOUR or 1 DAY for library and personal books, 3 HOUR or
1 DAY for videos. Photocopied items circulate for a
2 HOUR loan period.
Library purchases for reserve may require a minimum
of four weeks for purchasing and processing. Please
indicate if the title is available at the College Bookstore.
For Shain Library book and media orders contact Carol Strang, x2663
Personal materials such as books, audio and videotapes,
and photocpies can be brought directly
to the Reserve desk. The library will follow the guidelines
of the copyright law in placing photocopied material on reserve.
Materials placed on reserve that have been purchased or licensed
by the library do not require copyright permission. Any
charges incurred for other materials will be charged to the
academic department. A completed Copyright
Clearance Form must be submitted for each title
to be placed on reserve. Forms are also available at
the Reserve desk. The library will accept 1 copy per
15 students to a maximum of four copies per article.
Exceptions will be at the discretion of the Reserve Supervisor.
All copies to be placed on reserve must be provided by the
faculty member. A photocopy by-pass key is available at the circulation desk for faculty/departmental use.
At the end of each semester, faculty members are encouraged
to pick up their personal materials from the Reserve desk.
All remaining copies will be stored in library lockers assigned
to faculty members. Please ask at the Reserve desk for
the retrieval of materials from previous semesters.
Please direct any questions regarding reserve policy
or copyright clearance to Carol
Strang ext.2663 or Lori Blados ext.2662.

Further
Information
The electronic
scanning of copyright-protected works for library reserve
services, whether electronic or print, is an unsettled area of the law that may be addressed
in future revisions of the copyright law or through adjudication.
Connecticut College will monitor this and other legal developments
that may affect the fair use analysis of electronic reserve
services to ensure that library services are in compliance
with the letter and spirit of the United States Copyright
Law.
This work is based on policy and procedure at Oberlin
College,
Duke
University,
and the University
of Wisconsin- Madison.
