Research Databases
for the Biological Sciences
A research database is a collection of references--such
as citations and abstracts of articles--for a particular subject
area. Some research databases also contain the full-text of
articles. The following databases are useful for research
in Biology, Botany, and Zoology and are available to students,
faculty, and staff at Connecticut College. Contact the Reference
Desk for research assistance.
-
- Agricola
Produced by the National Agricultural Library. Covers
resources in agriculture and allied disciplines, including
plant and animal sciences, forestry, entomology, and soil
and water resources. Years of coverage are 1970 to the
present for books and 1979 to the present for journal
articles.
- Biological
& Agricultural Index
Produced by The H.W. Wilson Company. Covers resources
in biology and agriculture. Years of coverage are 1983
to the present. Partial full text.
- BioOne
BioOne is an aggregation of the full-text of high-impact
bioscience research journals. Most of BioOne’s titles
are published by small societies and non-commercial publishers.
Coverage is 1998 forward.
- Current Contents Connect
ISI Current Contents Connect is a multidisciplinary current
awareness Web resource, providing access to complete bibliographic
information of over 8,000 of the world's leading scholarly
journals and more than 2,000 books. Covered areas include
agriculture, biology, environmental science, life sciences
and earth science.
- CSA
Life Sciences Collection
Produced by Cambridge Scientific Abstracts. Covers resources
in life sciences disciplines including cell and molecular
biology, neuroscience, biochemistry, entomology, ecology,
immunology, microbiology, genetics, immunology, and agriculture.
Years of coverage are 1982 to the present. Additional
databases that can be accessed include Biology Digest,
Medline (10 years), Plant Science, Toxline and a Web Resources
database.
PubMed
Produced by the National Library of Medicine. Used to
access the Medline database. Covers resources in medicine,
nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care
system, and the preclinical sciences. Years of coverage
are 1966 to the present.
ScienceDirect
Produced by Elsevier Science. Covers resources in
chemistry, materials science, engineering and technology,
environmental science, pharmacology and toxicology, physics,
math and computer science, earth sciences, biochemistry,
microbiology and immunology, biological sciences, and
clinical medicine. Coverage for Elsevier titles
runs from Jan. 1995 forward. Academic Press titles (formerly
in the Academic Ideal database) run 1993 forward.
Subscribed titles are available full-text.
