Style Manuals
Information is also available from the Citation Guides for Print and Electronic Resources page.

Bellman, Jonathan.  A short guide to writing about music.  New York: Longman, 2000.
ML3797 .B4 2000
This source offers the usual style manual rules and examples, i.e., how to properly cite sources, how to format footnotes and bibliographies, how to write using correct grammar, and so on.  In addition, Bellman describes the different types of music writing assignments a musician might encounter – everything from a history paper to music analysis to criticism -- and suggests approaches to, and formatting of, each different kind of writing.

Standard music notation practice.  [a joint publication of the] Music Publishers’ Association and the Music Educators National Conference.  1993.
MT35 .S726 1993
Two major music organizations, the APA and the MENC, co-published this brief but useful pamphlet.

Wingell, Richard J.  Writing about music: an introductory guide.  3rd ed.  New Jersey:  Prentice Hall, 2002.
REF ML3797 .W54 2002
This book overlaps the Bellman book to some extent, but spends less time describing as many discrete writing projects.  Those Wingell does touch on are more typically college-oriented topics such as papers, seminar presentations, and concert reports.    He includes a brief section on evaluating resources, both print and electronic, an important step often overlooked by novice researchers.
