‘Connecticut College room’ boasts school colors, camel flair
Arm Lisey Good ’87 with camel-colored paint and some blue and white fabrics and she'll transform a 460-square-foot space into a special tribute to Connecticut College. The Boston-based interior designer, who majored in art history, did just that when she recently redesigned a hotel room in honor of her alma mater at the request of the College Club of Boston, the oldest college club for women in the country. Good’s efforts are part of the club’s “Dream Room Makeover Challenge,” which asks designers to renovate one of the club’s 11 guest rooms in honor of a college or university using its school colors, mascot or other characteristics that define the institution. Connecticut College was on the list of schools for designers to select from, along with Smith, Vassar, MIT and Boston University, among others. Choosing her alma mater was a no-brainer, Good said. “I really loved my time at Connecticut College and met my best friends there,” she said, adding that her mother, Pamela Good ’62, is also a CC alumna. “So I never for a second considered doing another school’s room!” Headquartered at 44 Commonwealth Ave. in a Victorian-style brownstone, the club promotes education and backs an annual campaign to raise scholarship funds for students in Boston public schools. In addition to its guest rooms, the club also boasts three larger rooms for events. The challenge was launched in an effort to promote the club’s facilities. As a member and proud CC alumna, Good was eager to accept the invitation to participate. The project is modeled after TV shows like “Design on a Dime” and “Trading Spaces” where designers are allowed limited time and resources to complete a makeover project. For this challenge, designers are given two weeks and a maximum budget of $7,500. And Good, who established her own business called Good Interiors, passed the test with flying colors. She uncovered the woodwork surrounding the bay window, making it the focus of the room, and painted the walls beige. The paint color she chose had a very fitting name – Camelback. Good used blue and white fabrics to replace the window seat covers, pillows and shower curtain and kept some of the room’s original antiques, like a 19th-century gilt mirror and bureau. But she added some touches of her own: two copperplate engravings depicting camels and a 19th-century map of Connecticut. Completing the project in the two-week time limit was no easy feat, Good said, since guests were staying in the room up until it was time for her to begin. “It was really difficult to plan every detail, like choosing art and accessories, in advance,” she said. “That's usually something I let evolve.” CC alumni are invited to attend the unveiling of the room Friday, April 22 at 6 p.m. and can R.S.V.P. to cclub.boston@verizon.net . Those interested in reserving the room can call The College Club of Boston at 617-536-9510 or visit www.thecollegeclubofboston.com for more information.
