Cross Country and field hockey

Cross Country
The Camel men’s and women’s cross country programs continue to run with the best in the region. The Camels will host two meets on their new course at Harkness State Park and the season kicks off with the Connecticut College Invitational Sept. 10. On Nov. 5, the Camels will host the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship at Harkness, an event that will bring together dozens of cross country programs from across the Northeast. NESCAC Co-Coach of the Year Jim Butler will rely on all-New England standout Brian Adams ’06 and John Ridyard ’06 to keep the Camels at the head of the pack. Women’s head coach Ned Bishop should benefit from the talented sophomore trio of Heather Stanish ’08, Elizabeth Claise ’08 and Lindsey Rothe ’08.

Field hockey
The 2005 season marks the beginning of a new era of CC field hockey as the Camels welcome the addition of a brand new state-of-the-art turf field. Under the direction of head coach Deb Lavigne, the Camels figure to be more of an up-tempo team on the faster surface. Sophomore speedster Jill Mauer ’08 netted a team-leading six goals and was named NESCAC rookie of the year. Forward Katie Williams ’07 is an explosive scoring threat and was selected for the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-Region team in 2004. Senior goalie Ashley Kenerson ’06 led NESCAC with 145 saves last season and will continue to be relied on in net.

Rowing, sailing and soccer

Rowing
Head coaches Ric Ricci and Eva Kovach lead the Camels on the water this fall. The rowing teams open the season Oct. 8 in Shelton, Conn. for the Head of the Housatonic River Regatta. On Oct. 21, all eyes will be on the banks of the Charles River as the teams compete in the 41st annual Head of the Charles Regatta.

Sailing
Under the direction of Jeff Bresnahan, the Camels are preparing for another exciting season on the water. The women’s team is coming off a fifth place finish at nationals and will be led by junior Elissa Leonard ’07 along with Meghan Lucy ’07 and Emily Whipple ’06 this year. Senior Henry Maxwell ’06 and sophomore Charlie Modica ’08 will lead the coed team into competition.

Soccer
Head coach Bill Lessig celebrates his 35th season at the helm of the CC men’s soccer program. Senior captain Eric Suffoletto ’06 will anchor the defensive unit and capable keeper Brendan Rampi ’06 returns to handle the goal-tending duties. Win Robinson ’08 and Everett Phillips ’06 will apply pressure on the offensive side of the field. The Camel women’s soccer team is coming off another championship run, advancing to the NESCAC semifinal before falling to Middlebury College in double overtime last season. NESCAC rookie of the year Claire Linden ’08 is a defensive stalwart and will keep the ball out of the middle of the scoring box. Cat Dickinson ’06 and Maggie Driscoll ’06 will serve as co-captains. Dickinson is a talented defender and a three-year starter while Driscoll has been a dangerous scoring threat and is capable of making plays in traffic and under pressure. Goal-keeper Kate Simmons ’06 enters her second season for the Camels and should see plenty of action in net.

Tennis, volleyball and water polo

Tennis
The Camel women’s tennis team has won 21 matches over the past two seasons, and narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAA Championship in 2004. Junior Beret Remak ’07 qualified for the NCAA championship in the spring and is coming off a stellar season at #1 singles for CC. Amanda Poe ’07 and Brittany Fallon ’07 have been steady contributors for 2005 NESCAC Coach of the Year Paul Huch.

Volleyball
Head coach Josh Edmed’s volleyball squad has recorded two back-to-back 10-win seasons. Senior setter Molly Kawachi ’06 dished out 711 assists in 2004. Courtney Hambleton ’08 notched 407 digs in her rookie season while senior Cynthia Whitman ’06 has been a steady performer on the front line and led the club with 259 kills and 52 blocks. The Camels open the season at home Sept. 10 with the annual Camel Invitational Tournament.

Water polo
Head coach J.J. Addison returns a host of players to a club that finished fifth at the NCAA Division III Eastern Division Championship in 2004. Senior captain Dylan Matzinger ’06 is an explosive offensive threat who netted 26 goals last fall. Granger Abuhoff ’06 and Alex Hoyt ’06 were also steady offensive contributors. Junior Alex Feinstein ’07 has developed into one of the better goalies in the Collegiate Water Polo Association.
