Students signed up to forgo dinner in a show of support for those living with hunger.

Nearly two-thirds of CC students gave up their evening meal on campus one day last month and raised a record $3,843 to fight hunger.
A total of 1,220 students participated in the annual fundraising event, a 30-year College tradition. The money they raised will be divided between the New London Community Meal Center and OXFAM America.
The students agreed to have their dining cards deactivated on the evening of Nov. 16. For each card, Dining Services credited $3.15. Additionally, five New London restaurants — Mr. G's, Café 57, Hot Rod Café, Mirch Masala and New China — donated 10 percent of the proceeds from meals sold to Connecticut College students that evening, increasing the total amount raised.
"Part of our education here centers on us being global citizens," said SGA President Evan Piekara '07. "This cause is very important to us because we can help the New London community, but also contribute to combating world hunger." Piekara said restaurants were invited to participate as a way to make the fundraising effort communitywide and because many students use the event as an opportunity to get off campus to enjoy a meal at one of the many local restaurants.
"It is important for the College community to show that we care about the community — and not just the local community, but the world community," said sophomore Lex Carpenter as he signed up to participate.
SGA member Rebecca Elias '08 agreed. "It's always good to give back, and this is a simple, easy way to get the whole college community into something and to give back."
The effort was sponsored by CC's Office of Religious and Spiritual Life, Dining Services and the SGA.
