Wuyke will focus on fitness program

William Wuyke has been named the College's first strength and conditioning coach.

William Wuyke, a 16-year member of the College's athletic program and former Venezuelan Olympian, has been named the College's first strength and conditioning coach.

"William (Wuyke) brings incredible energy and enthusiasm to our new fitness position," said Fran Shields, Katherine Wenk Christoffers '45 Director of Athletics and Chair of the Physical Education Department . "His reputation as a world-class runner, his outgoing personality, and care for our students' well-being strengthens our department."

Wuyke will be coordinating the strength and conditioning programming for the school's 28 varsity teams while continuing to direct the fitness and wellness center. As an adjunct associate professor of physical education, Wuyke will expand the fitness curriculum for Connecticut College students. As Wuyke assumes this new position, he will relinquish his duties as a member of the track and field coaching staff.

Shields will continue to rely on Wuyke for his leadership in the athletic program. Under Wuyke's direction, Connecticut College constructed the Lyn & David Silfen Track and Field in 1996. Additionally, Wuyke has coached numerous regional and national qualifiers, including NCAA runner up Dave Barron (Weight Throw) in 1994.

Ned Bishop '84, CC's women's cross country coach for the past 22 years, will assume the post as head coach of the Camel track and field program.
