Marshall and Hamilton slated for facelift
A $5 million renovation of two of the College’s larger residence halls — Marshall and Hamilton houses — will begin this summer. The project will be completed in two phases. The first phase will include renovation of the exterior facade, and will be completed this summer. The second phase will include interior renovations, including new furniture and new wiring, and will be completed in the summer of 2007. Marshall and Hamilton are part of “The Plex,” a cluster of six residence halls surrounding the College’s main dining hall that was built in 1960-62. Nearly all Connecticut College students live there at some point during their years on campus. Marshall and Hamilton are home to approximately 150 students. The Trustees recently approved both projects as fundraising priorities. To date, gifts and commitments for them exceed $2.9 million. The first four buildings of the Plex were gutted and fully rebuilt from the late 1990s into 2001. “This renovation is a clear sign of our renewed momentum,” said President Norman Fainstein. “We’re eager to complete the Plex project and offer students yet another comfortable residence option.” The College is also fundraising $2 million this year to renovate and install the latest wireless technology in another nine of the College’s 45 classrooms. The projects are the first in a blueprint for a major investment in the College’s campus through 2013. Others projects include renovation of Shain Library, a new life sciences building and a new fitness center.
