'Baal' runs through March 25
Actor Sara Jeanne Asselin '03, whose work on the New York stage has gotten great reviews, continues her track record with Bertolt Brecht's Baal. She plays several roles in the show, which runs Thursdays to Sundays through March 25 at the Looking Glass Theatre www.lookingglasstheatrenyc.com. "I've done a few Brecht plays, but none like this disturbing and beautiful epic. It's been a great acting challenge," Asselin said in an e-mail. "I play about seven different roles, all grotesque Brechtian monsters, i.e.; a haggard and shrill old landlady, a fortune-telling beggar (my personal favorite) a drunken ill bar maid, a lumberjack, an obese old patron of the arts, a compassionate saint, etc. ... I love all that. It really gives me a chance to play, so every night is different." In a 2005 review of another Brecht play, the Wall Street Journal lauded Asselin as an especially strong member of a solid cast. A nytheatre.com review of her current work says Asselin stands out for creating several strong characters. Asselin says she'd love to see CC alumni at the performances. Contact her at sara.j.asselin@gmail.com . Baal is Brecht's first piece, written when he was 20. Asselin's cast bio says: Sara Jeanne Asselin is thrilled to be a part of Baal . Sara was a resident actor at the Jean Cocteau Rep for three seasons, appearing The Wild Duck, The Bourgeois Gentleman, The Threepenny Opera, Intrigue And Love, Pygmalion and as Kattrin in the premiere of Mark Blitzstein's translation of Brecht's Mother Courage . Other NYC credits include Blood Wedding at Walkerspace, Unfamiliar Comforts at Three Legged Dog, The Trojan Woman with The Classical Theater of Harlem, and The Singapore Mikado at Theatre 1010. Sara interns at the Wooster Group and is a graduate of Connecticut College and The National Theater Institute.
