Commencement and Reunion 2006:
- Pomp and circumstance. The College’s 88th
Commencement exercises on Sunday, May 21 feature 2004 Nobel Peace Prize
winner Wangari Maathai.
- Out of the classroom. After 140 years of service,
four of CC’s faculty members retire in June.
- Reunion
2006. The stage is set for this year’s June 2-4 celebration
for class years ending in ’1 or ’6. Highlights include
a talk by former President Claire L. Gaudiani ’66.
Other campus news:
- Official visit. CC President-elect Lee Higdon,
Jr. meets with faculty, staff and students pledging to ‘invest in our
distinctiveness.’
- On screen. Barry Stringfellow ’82 writes the new
film “One Last Thing…” starring Cynthia Nixon, Ethan Hawke and Michael
Angarano.
- Water
polo. The women’s water polo squad causes a
splash against Division 1 teams.
- Bit by bit. Eben Cross ’03 earns a trip to Germany
on his quest to save the planet.
- Democracy matters. Activist and intellectual Cornel
West heralds the value of going outside your ‘comfort zone’ to find
joy in a recent campus lecture.
- Remembering Paul Fell. Varun Swamy ’01 learned
the power of patience from the beloved professor of zoology who died
in December 2005 — and he learned always to take the stairs.
