Alumni invited to cast ballots

Four alumni – Hildegard "Hildy" Meili Van Deusen '43, Ryan Chan '00, Tammie Clayton Reid '01 and Elli Nagai-Rothe '03 – have been nominated to be directors of the Alumni Association.

The Nominating Committee of the Board of Directors presents the candidates as a single slate, as required by the bylaws of the Association.

Alumni can vote calling 1-800-888-7549 or e-mailing the Office of Alumni Relations at alumni@conncoll.edu by July 1. Contact Bridget McShane, director of alumni relations, 860-439-2300, with any questions.

The Association would also welcome nominations for future board openings. Nominations should be mailed to the Office of Alumni Relations.

Members of the Nominating Committee are: Prescott W. Hafner '80, Santa Rosa, Calif.; Anne Mickle '89, Stevenson, Md.; Kathryn D. Smith '84, Worcester, Mass.; Rick Stratton '96, Milwaukee, Wis.; and Robin Wilson '82, New Haven, Conn.

Biographies of the nominees:

Hildegard "Hildy" Meili Van Deusen '43
An English major and member of Phi Beta Kappa, Hildy worked in publications most of her life. She has been an editor, overseen training and has also chaired a research department. Once her daughter was born, Hildy freelanced. When not working, Hildy has volunteered for the College as a class agent for her class since graduation in 1943. She has also served as class president for many years. Hildy and her husband spend their time traveling, golfing and swimming.

Ryan Chan '00
An international relations and Chinese language and literature double major, Ryan spent the fall of his junior year abroad in China. While at Conn, he chaired the Asian/Asian American Student Association and was the Housefellow at Lazarus House. After college, he worked as an English teacher in Japan for one year. Ryan currently is a paralegal at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. As a CC volunteer, Ryan has helped with his class reunion, assists with fundraising for the Annual Fund and assists the Admission Office with interviews through the CAAP   Program .

Tammie Clayton Reid '01
Tammie, recipient of the Anna Lord Strauss Medal, designed her own major, combining sociology, human development and education. After graduation, she spent five years at the Williams School as a teacher and administrator. She also served on the New London School Board for four years (one of the youngest members ever) and chaired the board for one year. Currently, Tammie is a consultant for Foundations, Inc. a non-profit that provides support for low-income children nationally. Tammie is involved with the Connecticut College Alumni of Color organization.   She is married to Travis Reid '03.

Elli Nagai-Rothe '03
A CISLA scholar and sociology-based human relations major with a self-designed focus in race and ethnicity, Elli won the Anna Lord Strauss Medal for outstanding work on numerous college committees, including the Presidential Commission for a Pluralistic Community and the Multiculturalism and Diversity Steering Committee. After graduation, she traveled through Turkey, India, Nepal and Pakistan. From 2004-2006, Elli was the principal of a small rural school in southern India, where she worked with a local NGO to start a school serving students from socially and financially marginalized communities. Elli currently works with two non-profits in San Francisco, serves on the Board of Directors for the Association of Dispute Resolution of Northern California and will attend graduate school in the fall to study international cross-cultural conflict resolution.
