Media BytesWhen asked if leadership is learned or inherent, President Lee Higdon said in a Sept. 22 interview on the New England Cable News channel, "I think there certainly are some inherent qualities that you are born with, but I really think [leadership] can be a learned practice. ...You can learn the theory and you can have the tools, but you've got to have the experience as well." CC wants to be a visible and supportive advocate of New London, "our city," President Higdon wrote in a Nov. 5 op-ed published in The Day. "In addition to discussing opportunities to help New London with teacher training, and providing use of our facilities and expertise, we are looking at involvement in other programs, such as community event planning and marketing and grant-writing support that benefits both the city and the college," he wrote. Tim Lee '98 was interviewed by The Villager (N.Y.) for a review of "Beckett Below," a compilation of four one-act plays, in the Nov. 1-7 issue. Lee is directing one of the plays. He is also the founder Ghostcrab, the company producing the plays. Lisey Good '87 was featured in an Oct. 19 Boston Globe article about interior designers who helped design rooms for the renovated College Club of Boston. Each room was dedicated to a college, and Good dedicated hers to CC. Edgar Allan Poe was a genius at "creating stories in which the irrational has a place," David Greven, assistant professor of English, said during an Oct. 22 interview on "Viewpoints," a weekly radio program broadcast on more than 330 U.S. stations. "The irrational is the very subject matter of what [Poe] is talking about," Greven said. "Connecticut College offers a special kind of education, and there are only a couple of hundred schools like it in the country," Armando Bengochea, dean of the college community, said in a Nov. 6 article in The Day. The article focused on Bengochea and his goals for diversifying the CC campus. "I think the college has an obligation to offer that kind of education to a larger segment of the population and help promote social mobility throughout the country." TreeHugger, an environmental blog, highlighted Connecticut College's wind turbine feasibility project in a Sept. 29 entry. A Sept. 12 Providence Journal article profiled Sage Shanley '07, captain of the field hockey and women's squash teams. "It's a lot of time and responsibility, but all in a good way," Shanley said of her field hockey position. "I enjoy being there for the girls. I'm enjoying this team ... I'm proud to be captain." An article in the Oct. 27 issue of The Day profiled Jim Butler, who is celebrating 20 years as cross country coach. CC runners from the past two decades gathered to fete Butler after the NESCAC championships. "Conn's a great place to coach," he said.
