Sam Vineyard ’96 takes first in Marion to Bermuda race

Sam Vineyard ’96 and his six-member crew aboard the Hawke, a J-46 sailing boat, captured first place honors in a 645-mile race this summer.

According to a story in the New Bedford Standard-Times, Vineyard and his crew were participants in the 15th biennial Marion to Bermuda race and received first place in Class A, the largest boat class. The race spans several days. Participants depart from Marion, Mass., Vineyard’s hometown, and head to Bermuda for the finish.

“It was fantastic,” Vineyard tells the Standard-Times in a June 25 story. “We sailed pretty well…right from the get-go.”

The article reports that Vineyard and his crew, which included his wife, Hilary, father, Gordon, and Randy Bartholomew ’94, “sailed the boat beautifully.”

“It was an absolute team effort,” Vineyard says. “It’s the crew that makes the boat go fast.”

Vineyard sailed for CC during his freshman, sophomore and senior years under the direction of head coach Jeff Bresnahan.

Tom Richardson ’00 also sailed in the race aboard the boat Restive. The Restive finished third overall and took first place in the Celestial Navagation class.
