Matt Frongillo ’01 wins marathonMatt Frongillo ’01 cruised past 732 runners to finish first in the 14th Sportshoe Maine Marathon on Sunday, Oct. 2. He defeated the second place runner by seven minutes, finishing the race in two hours, 41 minutes and 35 seconds, the Portland Press Herald reports in an Oct. 3 story. The 27-year-old from Bar Harbor, who calls himself an aspiring triathlete, says he was pleased with his performance even though he was aiming to finish in less than two hours and 40 minutes. “It got hot the last four miles or so and I lost steam,” he tells the Press Herald. Frongillo ran cross country for one year while a CC student. He ran his first marathon a year ago and has competed in two others since, the story says. Frongillo tells the Press Herald he took the lead at the half-way point of the race. “There was nobody in sight. At first I was a little nervous, because I thought I was taking it out too hard,” he says. “This is the first race I’ve won, at any distance.”
