Camels Clinch Berth in 2009 NESCAC Championship Tournament
MEDFORD, Mass. --The Connecticut College men´s soccer team (7-3-1, 4-3) clinched a playoff berth in the 2009 NESCAC Championship Tournament with a 2-0 victory against Tufts University (2-8-2, 0-6-2) at Bello Field.
Trevor Prophet (Nashua, N.H.) netted his eighth goal of the season in the 18th minute of action and Brian Morgan (Harvard, Mass.) added a critical insurance marker with 6:58 remaining for the Camels, who out-shot the hosts 13-to-7 in the triumph.
Alex Martland (Marblehead, Mass.) collected three saves en route to his fourth shutout of the season for Connecticut College. Pat Tonelli (Andover, Mass.) made five stops in the setback for the Jumbos.
The Camels got on the board with 27:53 remaining in the half. Sophomore Oscar Brown (Ridgefied, Conn.) penetrated the Tufts defense and delivered a cross from near the end line to Prophet, who found the back of the net for the goal.
In the latter stages of the second stanza, the Jumbos were penalized with a red card. Senior Mickey Lenzi (Hauppauge, N.Y.) entered the contest to provide some defensive support in the middle. But Lenzi was able to find a seam in the Tufts defense near the right sideline and chipped a cross ahead to Morgan for a critical insurance goal that put the game away.
Jourdan Perez (Lynbrook, N.Y.) turned in another solid performance in the midfield. Thomas Giblin (Ridgewood, N.J.) and the Camel defensive unit were able to limit the Jumbos to four shots in the second half.
The Camels will host Colby College Saturday afternoon for a 2:00 p.m. NESCAC tilt on Tempel Green.
