NEW LONDON, Conn.--Shawn Shand (Keene, N.H.) chipped in his 10th goal of the season 8:34 into the second half to lead the Keene State College Owls (12-6) past the Connecticut College Camels(8-4-1) Tuesday in a 1-0 victory on the Artificial Turf at Silfen Field. Danny Silverman (Maynard, Mass.) assisted on the score when he chipped the ball ahead to Shand on the right post side of the goal from the center of the box.
Senior Peter Kerskey (Ipswich, Mass.) had four saves for the Owls, who extended their winning streak to five games with the triumph. Rookie net-minder Kyle Rosse (Bedford, Mass.) made four stops for Connecticut College in his first start of the season for the hosts.
Keene State held a slight 8-to-6 edge in shots after a scoreless first half of action. Three and a half minutes into the second half of play, the Camels had a prime scoring chance. Oscar Brown (Ridgefield, Conn.) launched a 35 yard blast across the box to Trevor Prophet (Nashua, N.H.). Prophet was able to connect on a shot from point-blank range but Kerskey made a nice stop to thwart the scoring bid.
Shand was around the goal all afternoon and finally broke through with one of his nine shots for the goal in the 54th minute of play.
Later on in the 87th minute, Nick Maghenzani (Allendale, N.J.) made a nice move to rip off a low blast from 20 yards out but Kerskey was able to dive to the turf to make the stab for the Owls and the visitors were able to hold on for the 1-0 win.
Connecticut College will host Wesleyan University Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. on Freeman Field. Keene State will visit the University of Southern Maine for a 1:00 p.m. Little East game Saturday afternoon.
