MIDDLEBURY, Vt.--The Connecticut College swimming and diving teams opened the 2009-2010 season Saturday with a tri-meet against Middlebury College and Tufts University in Middlebury, Vt. The men´s team secured a 156-115 win against Middlebury and dropped a 162-132 decision to Tufts. On the women´s side, the Camels secured a 155.5 to 138.5 triumph against Tufts but were defeated by a score of 176-111 against Middlebury.
Sophomore All-America Tim Walsh (Lincoln Park, N.J.) and junior Harry Squires (Caldwell, N.J.) collected two wins each for the men. Junior All-America Sarah Murphy (Williamsburg, Va.) and first year Katie Karlson (Wayland, Mass.) were multiple event winners for the Camel women Saturday.
In the 100 yard backstroke, Walsh provisionally qualified for the 2010 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championship with a winning time of 52.07 seconds. Walsh posted a time of 1:57.49 en route to another victory in the 200 yard backstroke.
Squires stepped up in a major way with clutch victories in the 500 and 1000 yard freestyle for the Camels, posting respective times of 5:01.11 and 10:19.86 for the Camels.
The Camel men received three additional wins from their returning All-Americans Saturday. In the 100 yard free, Grant Moryan (Westfield, N.J.) posted a winning time of 48.63 seconds. Sam Perley (Charlotte, N.C.) cruised to victory with a time of 2:16.61 in the 200 yard breaststroke. In the 100 yard fly, Pat Troy (Bradford, N.H.) won in 51.74 seconds for Connecticut College.
In the 200 yard freestyle relay, Walsh, Troy, Austin Meszaros (Morristown, N.J.), and Moryan edged out the Tufts Jumbos by .11 seconds with a winning time of 1:27.35
Carlson earned a clean sweep in the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke events, posting winning times of 1:09.59 and 2:32.69 in her impressive collegiate debut. In the 100 yard freestyle, Sarah Murphy cruised to victory with a time of 54.62 seconds. Murphy posted a time of 2:10.18 to add another win in the 200 yard butterfly.
