24 Camels Named to NESCAC Fall All-Academic Team

NEW LONDON, Conn.--24 Connecticut College student-athletes have been named to the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Fall All-Academic Team. To be honored, a student-athlete must have reached junior academic standing and be a varsity letter winner with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.35. A transfer student must have completed one year of study at the institution. Seniors Thomas Giblin (Ridgewood, N.J.) and Mickey Lenzi (Hauppauge, N.Y.) helped lead the Connecticut College men´s soccer team to its best record in more than a decade and an impressive 5-4 mark in the NESCAC. Just the second Camel volleyball player to eclipse 1,000 kills and digs in a career, Lauren Wise (Oakton, Va.) played an integral role in the volleyball team´s 22 win season and won 70% of her matches (80-35) in her four years on the hardwood for the Camels. Senior sharp-shooter Connor Matzinger (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) netted 21 goals for the Camel men´s water polo team this fall. Kristen Dirmaier (South Burlington, Vt.), a two-year captain for the field hockey team, anchored the middle of the Camel defense that made its first appearance in the NESCAC Championship Tournament since 2005. Women´s cross country captain Colleen MacPhee (Maplewood, N.J.) was named to the All-Invitational team in the Plansky Invitational at Williams Oct. 17 and was one of eight members of her team honored on the All-Academic squad. Brett Herrick (Boxborough, Mass.) was the fifth Connecticut College men´s cross country scorer at the New England Division III Championship and is making his inaugural appearance on the All-Academic team. Senior defender Jessica Roeder (Durham, N.H.) started all 14 games in the backfield for the women's soccer team this fall. In addition to the conference accolades, three Connecticut College student-athletes were named to District Teams in the ESPN The Magazine/COSIDA Academic All-America Program. Senior Mickey Lenzi (Hauppauge, N.Y.) was named to the District One Men´s Soccer All-Academic First Team. Sharon Katz (Barrington, R.I.) was honored on the District One Women´s Soccer All-Academic Second Team while junior All-America Marissa DeMais of Hillsdale, N.J. was tabbed to the District One Volleyball All-Academic Second Team. Fran Shields, the Katherine Wenk Christoffers '45 Director of Athletics and Chair of Physical Education was impressed with the academic performance of the Camel student athletes. "We are very proud of the accomplishments of our student athletes," Shields said. "On the field and in the classroom, it was a successful season for our programs."
