Men's Water Polo-Division III Eastern Championship
Addison Named D3 Eastern Champ. Coach of the Year for Camels
NEW LONDON, Conn.--The Connecticut College men´s water polo program hosted the Division III Eastern Championship at Lott Natatorium this weekend.
Fourth seeded MIT (10-7) won three of its four matches and outlasted Johns Hopkins University in a 9-7 triumph Sunday to win the Division III Eastern Championship. Senior center John Preis (Los Angeles, Calif.) scored nine goals over the weekend to lead the Engineers and was honored as the most valuable player. Brian Gardiner (Upland, Calif.) and Columbus Leonard (Mill Valley, Calif.) joined Preis on the first team for the champs.
Johns Hopkins University (12-11) went 2-1 for the weekend to finish as the runners up. Sophomore Alex Whittam (Hillsborough, Calif.) and Ross Schofield (Greenwich, Conn.) garnered first team All-Tournament honors for the Blue Jays. Whittam exploded with 12 markers while Schofield added six scores.
The Connecticut College Camels (4-10) placed third with a 2-1 record. Head coach JJ Addison was honored as the Division III Eastern Championship Coach of the Year. Addison has worked tirelessly to develop both the men´s and women´s teams from their early stages as varsity programs in New London.
Junior Sam Mitchell (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) garnered first-team all-tournament honors, finishing with six goals over the weekend. Mitchell tallied a hat-trick in a 10-8 victory against Washington & Jefferson Saturday and chipped in with two more goals in a 13-7 win against W & J Sunday afternoon.
Junior James Green (Potsdam, N.Y.) and sophomore net-minder Clayton Witter (Douglassville, Pa.) nabbed second team accolades for the hosts. Witter made 46 saves in three starts between the pipes while Green handled some of the most challenging defensive assignments for the Camels.
The Behrend Bears of Penn State (6-18) finished fourth with a 1-3 record. Sophomore defender Colin McGarry (Annapolis, Md.) scored three of his six goals in a 15-9 victory against the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson Sunday to lead the Bears as a second team selection on the all-tournament team.
Washington & Jefferson (5-15) finished fifth with a 1-3 record. Senior Bill Krause (Blue Bell, Pa.) garnered first team all-tournament honors and led the Presidents with seven goals this weekend.
