Gabelman Named NEWBA Rookie of the Week
Shinall Tabbed to NEWBA Honor Roll for Camels
NEW LONDON, Conn.--The New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) has announced its weekly award winners for the time period of November 15-28 and two Connecticut College student athletes have been recognized for their efforts on the court.
Freshman Tara Gabelman of Irvington, N.Y. was honored as the NEWBA Rookie of the Week and junior Jenn Shinall of Redding, Conn. was named to the NEWBA Weekly Honor Roll.
Gabelman averaged a double-double on 19.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per game in the opening week of the season. She knocked down 52.4% (22-42) of her shots from the floor and 77.9% (14-18) of her free throw attempts. The first year forward recorded double-doubles in two of her first three collegiate outings.
Gabelman was named to the 2010 Brandeis University Women´s Basketball Judges Classic All-Tournament Team after leading the Camels to a 66-60 victory over Springfield College in the tournament's consolation game on November 21. In addition to erupting for 22 points, she also tallied 12 boards, five assists and a pair of blocked shots. Two days later, she recorded 25 points and 12 rebounds in her team's 72-52 triumph over Nichols College.
Shinall helped lead Connecticut College to a 2-2 start to its season with her solid all-around play in the backcourt. In addition to posting 19.5 points per game, she also amassed 4.8 rebounds, 4.3 steals and 2.3 assists per outing. The guard led the Camels to wins over Springfield College with 21 points and added 24 points, eight steals and five rebounds in a 72-52 win against Nichols College.
The Camels (2-3) will host Rhode Island College Thursday night for a 7:00 p.m. game at Luce Field House.
