Bernier beats the previous record - 200

03/11/2010

For the past four years, Shavar Bernier '10 has turned heads with his prolific play in the backcourt. It's fitting then that Bernier set Connecticut College's career record for three-pointers during his final game in a Camel uniform.

Bernier hit six three-point shots in the men's basketball team's final regular season game against Bowdoin College Feb. 13, for a career total of 203. The previous record was 200.

A 6-1 sharp-shooter, Bernier is 10th on the Camel's all-time scoring list with 1,187 points and finishes his career with 343 rebounds, 220 assists and 154 steals. He leads the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) in steals with 2.13 per game and ranks second in both free throw percentage (.875) and three-pointers made (2.83).

Head coach Tom Satran '94 says he´ll miss Bernier's presence on and off the court.

"Shavar is a tremendous talent, as his career accomplishments suggest, and his substantial ability is exceeded by his dedication, toughness and unselfishness," Satran said. "I am very lucky to have been associated with him for the past four years."

Bernier, a human development major, is the first man in his family to attend college. While he takes pride in his on-court accomplishments and flashy numbers, it's the people at Connecticut College that he will miss the most.

"Coach has been like a father to me since I've been here," Bernier said. "I´m so lucky to have him as my coach."

Two other Connecticut College records fell recently, both in the long jump. Alex DeShields '12 set a school record for men's indoor track with a jump of 21 feet and two inches and Margaret Thayer '10 made a record-setting leap of 16 feet and five inches.
