Sanderson Supplies Game-Winner for Camels
WATERVILLE, Maine ---(Colby College Sports Information) Laura Sanderson (Hanover, N.H.) scored off a wild scramble in front of the net after a penalty corner with no time left as Connecticut College pulled out a 3-2 win over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Saturday at Bill Alfond Field.
Connecticut College (2-0) had a big advantage in shots (24-11) and penalty corners (14-5) in the game. The game appeared to be headed to overtime until the Camels secured their 14th corner.
Colby goaltender Michelle Burt (Woodbridge, Conn.) made two fine stops on shots by Paige Murray (Andover, Mass.) and Kelsey Nickerson (Weston, Mass.) before Sanderson finally pushed home the game-winning shot.
The Camels had a fine start to the game, taking the first 10 shots of the game and going ahead 1-0 on a goal by Brittany Fitzgerald (Ridgefield, Conn.) with 14:50 left to halftime. Kat Barker (Dedham, Mass.) had the assist.
Colby's first shot of the game was 39 seconds after the Camel goal and the Mules made it count when Courtney Erskine (Turner, Maine) scored unassisted.
Despite a 14-5 lead in shots and a 9-2 edge in penalty corners at halftime, the Camels went into intermission down 2-1. Sarah Falkof (Wilmette, Ill.) tallied off a penalty stroke with 9:40 left to halftime to put Colby up for the first time.
The Camels scored off a penalty corner about seven minutes into the second half off a blast by Murray (Andover, Mass.). Liz Rosenfeld (Leola, Pa.) had the assist.
Becca Napolitano (Hamden, Conn.) had three saves for the Camels, while Burton stopped six shots.
