Hawkey Scores Twice to Lead Camels Past Wildcats in Home Opener
NEW LONDON, Conn.--Sophomore forward Billy Hawkey (Pennington, N.J.) scored a goal in each half to lead the Connecticut College men's soccer team to a 4-0 shutout victory against Johnson & Wales University in men's soccer action played on Tempel Green Tuesday afternoon.
Sophomores Paul Bacigalupo (Encino, Calif.) and Kevin Burt (New Canaan, Conn.) chipped in with scores for the Camel, who improved to 2-0 with the victory.
Sophomore net-minder Casey Marini (Hampden, Mass.) earned the victory with two saves in 65 minutes of action, while sophomore Max Nichols (Mill Valley, Calif.) chipped in with a save in relief duty.
Johnson and Wales University junior keeper Anthony Sitek (West Windsor, N.J.) kept his team in contention with six first half saves for the visitors. Rookie net-minder Jason Peraza (Stamford, Conn.) made one save in relief duty for the Wildcats (0-5).
The Camels opened the scoring in the 18th minute of action. Mike Crosby (Sudbury, Mass.) chipped a ball across the box from the right the side, and Hawkey chipped it in at the far post. In the 55th minute of play, the Camels added an insurance goal when Bacigalupo was able to bury a header on a corner kick off the leg of Oscar Brown (Ridgefield, Conn.) to make it a 2-0 game.
Hawkey scored his second goal in the 65th minute of action. The Camels closed out the scoring with 8:43 to go, when Burt one-timed one from the left side off the box. Win Murdoch (Cropseyville, N.Y.) and Daniel Sandoval (East Windsor, N.J.) assisted on the score.
The Camels held a 14-to-5 advantage in shots and enjoyed a 9-to-4 edge on corner kicks.
Connecticut College will visit Hamilton College Saturday afternoon for a 2:30 p.m. NESCAC game in Clinton, N.Y. The Wildcats will host Mitchell College Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. tilt in Providence, R.I.
