Connecticut College makes list of top green colleges

Connecticut College has earned a spot on The Princeton Review's "Guide to 311 Green Colleges," an annual guidebook saluting the nation's most environmentally responsible green colleges. "This honor recognizes Connecticut College's long history of environmental leadership and commitment to sustainability," President Leo I. Higdon Jr. said.

"As the College moves into its second century, we are focused on long-term sustainability goals that will build on a solid foundation of environmental initiatives." The "Guide to 311 Green Colleges" highlights each college's most impressive environmental and sustainability initiatives and provides "Green Facts" about the college's use of renewable energy sources, recycling and conservation programs and environmental study opportunities. In the Guide, The Princeton Review highlights Connecticut College's environmental studies program and unique interdisciplinary certificate program through the College's Goodwin-Niering Center for the Environment.

These academic programs - as well as the College's active student organizations, including the Renewable Energy Club, Sprout organic garden club and SpokesPeople bicycle collective - are credited with leading a number campus-wide sustainability initiatives. The profile also commends the College for its 750-acre arboretum campus, 10-kilowatt solar panel installation, 37 percent waste diversion rate, commercial-sized composting bins and history of offsetting energy usage through the purchase of renewable energy certificates.
