Art, music and 'Incidental Matters' at Connecticut College this May

May is the month for music, senior thesis presentations and Commencement at Connecticut College. The following events are open to the public and free unless otherwise noted:

Art

- Now-May 20: "Connecticut College Senior Art Major Exhibition 2012," showcasing artwork by Connecticut College senior art majors, Cummings Arts Center Galleries, Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1-4 p.m. Through drawing, design, sculpture, photography and installation art, this multifaceted show investigates identity, otherness, intuition, time, memory, beauty and community. - May 1-4: "My Heart Is Red: Paintings by Guo Zhen,"an exhibit featuring 16 paintings by contemporary Chinese artist Guo Zhen, 8 a.m.-8 p.m., Charles Chu Asian Art Reading Room, Shain Library.

Music

- May 1: "A Guitar Concert," featuring performances by Jacob Bacher '15, Erik Caldarone '12, Liam Lawson '14, James Mamana '15 and Andrew Stein-Zeller '14; directed by Adjunct Associate Professor of Music James McNeish, 7 p.m., Harkness Chapel.

- May 3: "Connecticut College Orchestra Concert," conducted by Assistant Professor of Music Mark Seto, 7 p.m., Evans Hall, Cummings Arts Center. Tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for students and seniors. For tickets or information, call 860-439-2720.

- May 4: "Jazz in the Courtyard," a performance by Connecticut College's Jazz Ensemble and Traditional Jazz Band, conducted by Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music Gary Buttery, 4 p.m., Castle Court, Cummings Arts Center. - May 6: "Connecticut College Concert Band," conducted by Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music Gary Buttery, 7 p.m., Evans Hall, Cummings Arts Center. Tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for students and seniors. For tickets or information, call 860-439-2720.

- May 7: "Connecticut College New Music and Percussion Ensemble in Concert," directed by Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music Peter Jarvis, 7 p.m., Evans Hall, Cummings Arts Center. For information, call 860-439-2720.

- May 8: "Charles Shackford Memorial Student Composers Concert,"featuring works composed by Connecticut College students, directed by Arthur Kreiger, the Sylvia Pasternack Marx Professor of Music at Connecticut College, 6:30 p.m., Evans Hall, Cummings Arts Center. Other Events

- May 1: "May Day Celebration," an annual sunrise event featuring the Westerly Morris Men and the Mystic Garland Dancers, 5:30 a.m., Tempel Green.

- May 3: "Goodwin-Niering Center for the Environment Student Presentations," students from the College's Goodwin-Niering academic center will present their honors theses, 4:30 p.m., Olin Science Center Room 014.

- May 3: "Ma Vie En Rose" film screening, hosted by the LGBTQ Resource Center, 4:30 p.m., LGBTQ Resource Center, Burdick House.

- May 4: "Holleran Center Certificate Program in Community Action and Public Policy (PICA) Gateway Student Community Project Presentations," sophomore students in the "Public Policy and Social Ethics and Community Learning Seminar" will present on their community learning projects at the New London Senior Center, the New London High School AVID program and the New London Homeless Hospitality Center, 11:30 a.m., Blaustein Humanities Center Room 210.

- May 4: "Deep Place: New London Hall." Explore this interactive, immersive 3D installation about the history and renovation of New London Hall, noon-3:30 p.m., Alice Johnson Room, College Center at Crozier-Williams. Created by Amy Barrett '12, a scholar in the College's Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology, this interactive installation uses "Kinect" technology and new and archival materials, 3D models, time-lapsed photography, audio and video and more to examine the history, reconstruction and sustainability of the College's oldest building.

- May 4: "Incidental Matters," a multi-media performance by Alex Zarecki '12, a scholar in the College's Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology, 5:30 p.m., Oliva Hall, Cummings Arts Center. "Using Microsoft Kinect and Max/MSP/Jitter, "Incidental Matters" incorporates music, dance, video, sculpture and content from various religious studies and English courses to tell a story that both reflects and looks forward. A team of seven musicians, dancers and crew support and accentuate this otherwise solo-driven presentation.

- May 10: "English Department Senior Honors Thesis Presentations," 7:30 p.m., Charles Chu Asian Art Reading Room, Shain Library.

- May 11: "Mother's Day Plant Sale," featuring Martha Washington geraniums, New Guinea impatiens, mandevilla, hydrangeas and flowering azaleas, hosted by the Connecticut College Arboretum, 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., outside of the College Center at Crozier-Williams. For information, call 860-439-5020.

- May 11: "Education Department Portfolio Fair," featuring student teacher portfolio presentations, 3 p.m., 1941 Room, College Center at Crozier-Williams.

- May 11: "Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology Senior Presentations," students from the College's Ammerman Center will present their senior projects, 4 p.m., Olin Science Center Room 014.

- May 20: 2013, 11 a.m., Tempel Green. The Honorable Louis B. Susman, United States ambassador to the Court of St. James in London, will serve as the keynote speaker. The processional begins promptly at 10:35 a.m.
