Women's volleyball ranked No. 1 in New England

These Camels are on a roll.

With a record of 22-2, including 10 consecutive wins and not a single loss in the month of October, the women's volleyball team has earned the program's first No. 1 ranking from the New England Women's Volleyball Association poll.

Friday, the Camels beat Hamilton College 3-0 in the regular season home finale. With the win (and a loss by another conference team), the Camels won the right to host the 2012 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship next weekend. The team is also vying for a spot in the NCAA tournament.

The match was bittersweet for the team's three seniors, Carly Guiducci, Katie Ketcham and Rachel Schroff. They were honored with senior night ceremonies before Friday's match.

"Our senior class has bled Connecticut College blue since stepping foot on campus three and a half years ago," said coach Josh Edmed. "The pride, dedication and lead-by-example attitude that this group has demonstrated in every facet of their affiliation with the College has been nothing short of outstanding."

Guiducci said making the NCAA tournament would be an incredible achievement for the program, which competes in Division III's most competitive conference.

"It would be an epic way for Rachel, Ketch and me to round out our four years as members of Connecticut College Volleyball," she said.

Ketcham, who leads the NESCAC with 10.15 assists per set, attributes the team's success to great coaching and a team dynamic built on a strong sense of camaraderie.

"The most exciting part of this season has been how our team has come together," she said. "It's always a risk when you have a team with new players - and this year we had eight newcomers - but I think we have done a great job meshing as a team both on and off the court."

The NESCAC tournament is Nov. 2-4 at the College's Luce Field House. The Camels will take on No. 8 Colby at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2. The game will be streamed live through First Team Broadcasting.
