Winnie Bing Edmed named interim coach
Winnie Bing Edmed will return to her roots with the Camel soccer program and the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) as interim head women’s soccer coach. Edmed served as lead assistant coach from 1997-2003 under the direction of former Camel coach Ken Kline, who announced his resignation in November 2005. She played a key role in developing the program into a national contender and helped guide the Camels to three post-season appearances. In 1998, CC won the Metro Regional Championship and advanced into the NCAA Elite Eight. CC completed the season ranked #8 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national poll, the highest finish in program history. “It gives me great pleasure to see my very capable former assistant coach take on the role of head coach,” Kline said. “Winnie will be an asset to both the women’s soccer team and Connecticut College.” Edmed returns to CC from Mitchell College, where she served as the head women’s soccer coach and senior women administrator for the past 18 months. Before joining the staff at Mitchell, Edmed spent one year in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) as an assistant women’s soccer coach and recruiting coordinator at Babson College. As an athlete, Edmed has proved to be one of the most prolific soccer players to compete in the Nutmeg State. A native of Old Lyme, Conn., Edmed was rated the fourth best women’s soccer player in the state for the 1991 season by the Hartford Courant. She garnered All-New England honors at Keene State College before returning home to receive her bachelor’s degree at Eastern Connecticut State University in 1999. Edmed holds her national diploma in coaching from the NSCAA. She is pursuing a master’s degree in sports science and coaching from the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Ala. Fran Shields, the Katherine Christoffers ’45 Director of Athletics and Chair of Physical Education, is excited about Edmed’s return to campus. “Winnie has a wealth of collegiate coaching experience,” he said. “We’re fortunate she’s here to step into an interim role, especially for continuity in our recruiting efforts this spring.”
